grant (764), Martinez, California, USA Jan 31, 2003 Well, I'm male, and I guess in direct opposition to what some have noted below, I like this. I've had quite a few raspberry wheats, and I like the idea of jazzing up a pretty boring style (American Wheat). I thought this one was well done. The raspberry tasted natural, and the wheat/malt backround was solid. There were two problems, however: 1. This was ambitiously way overcarbonated. and 2. This beer was a little on the sweet side. Overall not a bad effort.
BlackDonald (1039), North Carolina, USA Jun 4, 2008 Subtle fruit aroma linger in the nose, slighty floral, with some cereal grain maltiness. This has obviously gone down hill since 1995. I don’t get it. Tastes unnatural, the fruit just does not work for this beer. Dogbrick (2348), Columbus, Ohio, USA Feb 9, 2008 Sample at the brewpub. Pours a hazy straw color with a thin bone white head that burns away quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of tart raspberries and light wheat. Light bodied and crisp with raspberry and citrus flavor primarily, with some sweet malt and wheat underneath. The finish is short and fruity with a lingering raspberry aftertaste. Average all around. Gregis (937), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Aug 17, 2007 Pours a hazy straw with a frothy white head. On the nose is a dominant medicinal, plastic-like raspberry extract and backing floral notes; it smells oddly unnatural. Light, thin and exceedingly dry for a fruited wheat. This won a medal, huh? I’m not getting that. Take a sub-par American wheat, add a funky raspberry extract and you get a sub-par, soapy, fruit beer. These guys are capable of so much more that I’m baffled why this remains one of their 5 staple beers. I guess someone’s buying it. vyvvy (1775), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Apr 19, 2007 Pours golden with a light hazy and no head. The aroma has lots of fresh raspberries and smooth wheat. Fairly light body that is smooth at first and then has a crisp finish with mild sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with a dry wheat flavor and thin only hints of raspberries on the finish. The aroma is much better than the taste. theisti (1166), Leawood, Kansas, USA Dec 27, 2006 Tap, brewpub, part of six pack sampler. See my review for Cow Town wheat + raspberry, which did not even seem blended with the beer. Bronze at ’95 GABF? I guess it pays to be ahead of the fruit beer game.
