COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sometimes - OK, rather often, actually - I find myself asking, "How far can we take it?" Keeping in mind that flavour should be the main objective at all time, the conception of Bumaye was one of those moments. To make it we started out with the baddest imperial stout we have ever brewed, and then added loads of tasty sugars to the fermenter foe extra flavour. To smooth out the roughness, we allowed the beer to mellow in Pinot Noir barrels for more than a year.

An experimental 17% Imperial stout released for Beervana 2012.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose/taste of port wine, oak, dark fruit, brown sugar, chocolate liqueur and desert wine. Full bodied. A bit sweet.

Bottle. Very dark brown to black with no head to speak of. Lots of Pinot straight away. This really needs a big snifter and some time to open up. The wine eventually makes way for a lovely warm cocoa quality, kind of sugary, a little burnt. The flavour... big Pinot notes, a decent alcohol hit which is unsurprising. Chocolate. There is a lot of sweetness here but the tartness and tannins of an immense wine-barrel character really cuts through the sweetness. I’m not sure if the pinot mellows the stout, I think it’s presence is too strongly felt.

bottle at mondial 2014, mtl. pours unclear very dark brown, almost black with a very nice crema, good retention and lacing. aromatic bourbon more than vinous notes, but eh, roasted malts, dark chocolate, burnt hazelnuts, maple and vanilla - never overwhelming, cola, resin, dirt, bitter coffee, warming booze, red fruity undertones - berries and raisins - very lightly tart too, wood and tannins. low carbonation, medium to full body - oily, surprisingly not cloying, maple syrup and molasses-like sweetness, bold bitter coffee-piney-tannic finish. good stuff.

Black color, no head. Dark chocolate/espresso aroma, wine or brandy notes, moreso wine i guess given how rounded the smell is. Gives it a little sweetness. Similar flavor, a bit of cherry or vanilla, more prominent ash note from the roast. Alcohol is subdued initially but it warms on the tongue toward the end. Wood comes out in the finish. Great example of a big stout that trends bitter rather than sweet, and the wine gives it a fairly unique character.

Rumble in the Jungle, 1974. (Thanks to dresden and kbudd19 for the bottles)

Countbeer (4302) - Best of E-Town mit ein Brauhaus, NETHERLANDS - MAY 3, 2014
Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Small quickly disappearing lively brown foamy head. Leaves a headless black beer. Aroma is very nice, bourbon, vinous, roast, liquorice, wood, Flavour has too much liquorice and alcohol. But let it breath for a while and you have a better beer. Still some strong alcohol and liquorice tones but acompanied by a nice wood/bourbon/vanilla/vinous note, some spices (alcohol/alcohol burn), herbs, malts, bitters, roast and coffee with a dark chocolate edge. Aftertaste is dark chocate, some cocos, light woody, some liquorice and vanilla. Low carbo, creamy spicy close to silky mouthfeel, full bodied and a oily creamy texture. A lot of alcohol, it’s ok, but the alcohol burns a bit...

26-APR-2014, bottle @home, from Mikkeller & Friends. Black with quickly dying tan head that leaves a dull black surface. Very dense looking. Aroma is oak, bourbon, roast, chocolate, soy, sugar, alcohol Taste the same with loads of red wine character added. The red wine barrels also adds a little tartness but that just helps balancing the immense sweetness. Full body, soft carbonation, long alcoholic and roasted finish. Aroma somewhat resembles Bourbon County Stout but taste is very different with the wine notes. Very interesting but far too expensive and not worth the price tag.

Dark pour with a small ring of foam. Aroma is red wine and rich chocolate with some oak. Taste is dark chocolate, cherry, and heavy tannins. Really boozy but tasty as well.
