Sometimes - OK, rather often, actually - I find myself asking, "How far can we take it?" Keeping in mind that flavour should be the main objective at all time, the conception of Bumaye was one of those moments. To make it we started out with the baddest imperial stout we have ever brewed, and then added loads of tasty sugars to the fermenter foe extra flavour. To smooth out the roughness, we allowed the beer to mellow in Pinot Noir barrels for more than a year.

An experimental 17% Imperial stout released for Beervana 2012.

Bottle. Vinous chocolate malt and hay aroma. Black with small head. Dry earthy red wine dominates flavor - very light chocolate malt and hay flavors in the background. Nice but wine flavor overwhelms everything else.

12 oz bottle at Sergio's, courtesy of Tyler, thanks! The pour is a light black with hints of brown around the edges and a thin ring of light khaki head and no lace. The aroma is beautiful. There is a strong roasted caramel malt and it comes off really sweet. There is a lot of alcohol heat on the back end but the sweetness is really good. The flavor is a little hotter. There is a lot chocolate malts and a great sweet roasty character. The mouth feel is thin for a 17% barrel aged stout. The aftertaste is lingeringly smooth and nicely roasty before it finishes with a little bit of a boozy heat ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Black, oil, no head....just the most thin of tan ring.... Cola, smoke, chocolate/raisin aroma. Even a bit of sting/heat from the boozy notes in the nose. Vinous, burned chocolate malt, and alcohol flavor. Boozy, but smooth.... Sticky sweet with a heavy alcohol/ashy bitter finish. To be sipped......gently....make no mistake, this is a BIG beer.

0.33l bottle brought home from 2d2dspuma. Looks a bit like pouring oily here. Itís really thick and dark, not even a hint of a head on this and the beer itself is really deep dark ruby brown in color. Lovely lovely nose! Itís really rum infused. Wood, vanilla, salty rope with soy sauce, coconut and dark dark bitter chocolate. Mmmhh.. What a lovely aroma indeed! This is one of those flavor bombs! Oh, my.. Itís almost a little like liquefied deep dark chocolate that has been added whisky, wood, port wine, burnt sugar and charcoal. It has a really good thick chewy mouthfeel and itís only softly softly prickling on the carbonation bubbles. Not to far off flat really. Having problems describing all the different flavors here, there are so many and itís so concentrated! In the finish itís tailing off lots of salty licorice, tanninís and charred wood. A true sipper in every way! 14.09.2014

33cl bottle. pitch dark, smooth small brown head. aroma is wood, hard roasted malts, faint boozy note too. strong.. but a little bit one dimensional the abv considering. Flavor is incredibly rich, insane roasted malty intense note, as well as loads of wood, and then finer notes proably from the wood too. salty licorice notes. very tasty for a 16%abv imp stout, not as sweet as feared, the bitterness is stunning, almost peppery. tastes more like some badass 40% liqeur than a mere 16% black beer. lots of power.

bottle @ Winoís Depot / Lima OH --- Opaque black color, thin brown rim head, no lace. Very still. Nice aroma of malt and wine. Taste is malt, dried dark fruit, and wine that moves through the palate in a big way before finishing with only the briefest infusion of hops. A big brew, yes, but that doesnít automatically qualify it for a big score. This one seems lifeless and without any traditional edge. There is alcohol warmth, of course (címon, itís 16%abv!), but it doesnít appeal as a drink to ever seek again.

Aroma is deep rich malts, caramel, espresso and fig. Taste is a deep strong rich sweetness. Some notes of rye, vanilla and caramel. Slight funk and roastiness. Appearance is black with a thin pearl head that retains fairly poorly.
