COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sometimes - OK, rather often, actually - I find myself asking, "How far can we take it?" Keeping in mind that flavour should be the main objective at all time, the conception of Bumaye was one of those moments. To make it we started out with the baddest imperial stout we have ever brewed, and then added loads of tasty sugars to the fermenter foe extra flavour. To smooth out the roughness, we allowed the beer to mellow in Pinot Noir barrels for more than a year.

An experimental 17% Imperial stout released for Beervana 2012.

Looks.. Big black brown, little to nil head, just a ring around the glass. Smells.. Dark dried fruits, liquorish, dark roasty choc malts, loads of the Pinot noir barrel.. Boozy. Tastes.. Roasted dark choc malts, liquorish saltiness, dark dried/spiced fruits, loads on tannin from the barrel. Big.

Bottle from Tipples poured to a tulip. Pours pitch black with no head at all even after an aggressive pour. Huge vanilla aroma, a bit of fruity vinous notes, oak, booze, chocolate. Lots going on. Taste begins with astringent wine-like alcohol, some funky chocolatey good n plenty and huge smokey peat in the middle--weird--then a surprisingly beautiful vanilla and oak finish on top of some sweet chocolate that lingers a good while. Mouthfeel is pretty viscous with low carbonation and a good bit of booze heft. This was a little strange for me, though I wish I could just go straight from the smell to the long finish. A unique flavor profile for sure.

(33 cl bottle from Toft Vin; Brewed in 2011 and bottled in 2013) Pours pitch black with small toffee head that subsides quickly leaving film and a ring of lace. Initial aroma is heavily oak with notes of tannine and red grapes. Some coconut, roasted malt and vanilla comes through as it warms as well as a hint of booze. Creamy texture, full body, soft carbonation and a protracted complex finish which starts out astringent with a sweet interlude and ending up dry, tannic and warming. Flavour is complex but it seems that the sweetness from the malt and sugar is counterbalanced well from the barrel and tannines. Quite pleasant and able to stand up to the big American Imperial Stouts even if the ABV is maybe slightly excessive.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2014 Pours like engine oil. Aroma of malts, fruits, strong red wine. Tastes like chocolate, malts, caramel, toffee, espresso, raisins, port, oak, pinot noir, strooong wine. Felt like a cheeky kick in the arse after the first sip but the rest got progressively easier (probably due to the abv which was noticeable but tasted like a 8-9.5 not a 16%). A crazy beer I bought just to try and because it?s done by 8-Wired. Wouldn?t drink this again but it was pretty great to try as a crazy one off.

330ml bottle @ BrewDog. Black, no head. Treacle alcohol aroma & flavour. Sour wine aftertaste. This is not really a beer. Horrible.

Odense drinking Belgian Beer in February. Black with a small tan head. Aroma of licorice and caramel, dried fruit, candy notes, some vineous alcohol, and light wood. Sweet and alcoholic roasted and malty flav9our, with some wine tannins, a little pepper and some fruit.

Thick motor oil black pour with nice chocolate tab head. Aroma, wow, crazy amount oak, lots of wine barrel, smells like a fine port, raisins, dark fruit, toffee, caramel, lots going on here. Taste - boozy but for the abv it’s not that bad, it’s mostly up front, lots of wine like notes, oak, finishes bitter with a coffee like aftertaste. Really nice stout, a big one but doesn’t drink like the abv which is a scary...this stuff will sneak up on you.

Bold and very wine like - obviously. The barrel component is quite prominent. Otherwise a big, ballsy impy. Chocolate, vanilla rich and smooth. Could be a little fuller in the body for 16%, but time in the barrel will do that to ya.
