COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sometimes - OK, rather often, actually - I find myself asking, "How far can we take it?" Keeping in mind that flavour should be the main objective at all time, the conception of Bumaye was one of those moments. To make it we started out with the baddest imperial stout we have ever brewed, and then added loads of tasty sugars to the fermenter foe extra flavour. To smooth out the roughness, we allowed the beer to mellow in Pinot Noir barrels for more than a year.

An experimental 17% Imperial stout released for Beervana 2012.

Big beer. Aroma of red wine. Big boozy taste hot needs some ageing to mellow this out. Pinot noir flavours dominate this beer with just hint of roast malts. As the beer mellows and warms slightly more roast flavour come though, but even more dark fruit flavours come out. Best of both worlds red wine and stout. Works well and I think give this a few years will come into its own. Might buy a couple to cellar.

0.33l bottle brought home from 2d2dspuma. Looks a bit like pouring oily here. It’s really thick and dark, not even a hint of a head on this and the beer itself is really deep dark ruby brown in color. Lovely lovely nose! It’s really rum infused. Wood, vanilla, salty rope with soy sauce, coconut and dark dark bitter chocolate. Mmmhh.. What a lovely aroma indeed! This is one of those flavor bombs! Oh, my.. It’s almost a little like liquefied deep dark chocolate that has been added whisky, wood, port wine, burnt sugar and charcoal. It has a really good thick chewy mouthfeel and it’s only softly softly prickling on the carbonation bubbles. Not to far off flat really. Having problems describing all the different flavors here, there are so many and it’s so concentrated! In the finish it’s tailing off lots of salty licorice, tannin’s and charred wood. Pours black with quick fading tan head. Smell is very sweet, alcohol and oak. Taste is also sweet, considering the 16% the alcohol is well hidden. Oak, dark fruits, chocolate, red wine. Warming and a dry finish.

Shared with Z, on last dY before leaving for O town, pours a dark pitch black pour with no head. Nose is more like a bottle of pinot than a stout, but there is some break through malt. Taste is sweet bitter chocolate with ripened fruit and tannins and really warms the palate. Finishes like a fine wine, with an oaky alcohol finish. Masterfully done ! A sipper ! Quaff Score 9 /10

Bottle. Pours black with a small brown head and aroma of alcohol, oak, and wine. Taste is strong and sweet, wine and whiskey notes with dark fruits, chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, and oak with a warming, long finish. Delicious brew

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours ack with a dirty tan head. Nose is very dark chocolate, bordering on bitter cocoa, with mildly tarty berries, black cherry like, brown sugar and molasses sweetness. Not overly sold on Pinot and stout integration. It’s really quite sweet and mildly tarty. Very soy and vegemite like as it warms which I hate. At 16% it’s a huge one and the heat isn’t overbearing in any way. I just don’t think the barrel goes with such a big beer. Normally love 8 Wired stuff but this one isn’t doing it for me

Bottle. Almost no head, thick and syrupy looking body. Really sweet tasting with lots of wine characteristics. Couldn’t tell whether this was a wine flavoured beer or a beer flavoured wine, but whatever it was it was mighty enjoyable!

Clairement vieillie en fut puisque le boisée ressort énormément au nez. Sombre, sans mousse. A presque le goût exact d’un vin rouge, aux arômes de cerises, cacao et poivre. Chocolat noir. Tout en un : dégustation de porto et chocolat.

Bottle shared at Embassy Hotel, Brisbane Sinister looking black beer with thin dense brown head. Seriously complex nose; dark chocolate, espresso, toasty oak, serious Pinot-esque mulchy undertones, port-like dried fruits. Thick, fortified-wine-like, warming, low carbonation, lingers long on the palate, there’s actually a bit of tannin & structure there. Palate continues with dark stouty chocolate & coffee notes combining with dank oak & funky Pinot red fruits and forest floor complexity. A touch of tartness cuts through the richness. Warming finish, alcohol not shy. A truely unique beer - it’s not just oak aged, you can actually taste Pinot Noir nuances. Very fortunate to have tried it!
