COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In my opinion, coffee rivals beer for the title of "greatest beverage in the world". I often say that I would rather give up beer than coffee. So it is only natural that we would attempt to make a beverage that incorporates both. If we were to succeed, surely this would then become the greatest beverage in the world? After years of research and trials in the garage, I have come up with what I think is the perfect marriage of coffee and beer: A hoppy double brown ale, that compliments both the roasty and fruity aspects of the coffee without putting up too much of a fight. The coffee was selected in collaboration with the Christchurch institution C4 Coffee and consists mainly of lightly roasted, delicate and floral, Ethiopian beans. Worlds are colliding and, in my humble opinion, greatness is achieved on the other side.

HOPS: Pacific Jade, NZ Cascade and Pacifica

MALT: Gladfield Pale, Crystal, Munich, Caramalt, Chocolate, Oats

YEAST: Wyeast 1272 - American Ale II

from Erzbierschof - clear dark brown beer with a modest head retention; earthy, biscuity maltiness toped by coffeish notes; pretty full-bodied, tasty and quite hoppy; biscuity malty hoppy and coffeish aftertaste - very pleasant

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is medium to dark brown. Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (coffee, coffee, coffee, roasted grain, caramel, chocolate milk), lightly hoppy (herbs), with a light note of gum. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Well, itís definitely over the top with the coffee, no argument with the "double coffee" name. Itís kind of one-dimensional as a result, though...the coffee is a bit acrid in the nose but fortunately not in the mouth. Fairly sweet, but not in a syrupy-cloying way, and thereís just enough bitterness in the finish to keep it drinkable (and itís quite clean as well...no huskiness or foulness). Nice creamy mouthfeel and lasting head give it a few extra points, but as a whole itís a bit of a novelty.

On tap at Frisco: pours a clear bright mahogany with a stringy lacing light tan head. Has a big fresh roasty coffee nose with some lightly sweet toasted malt underneath. Starts with pretty good fullness and toasted malty sweetness with lots of roasty coffee flavor and bitterness before a drier bittersweet finish. An interesting and well-made brew.

500ml bottle in a plastic cup. Pours brown with a lacy head. Aroma of caramel and chocolate malts, coffee, and some floral hops. Flavor the same with a good blend of coffee, floral hops, and malts. Average texture. A pretty good brown ale.

Draft at the Craft Beer Company, Clerkenwell. Poured a dark brown colour with a thin tan head. The aroma is hugely coffee and liqourice. The flavour is bitter smoky liqourice and dark chocolate. A superb, tasty and very satisfying beer.

Sampled from 50cl bottle thanks to Joes. Very dark brown to dark red color with a deep dark red color, medium sized beige head that diminishes fairly quickly. Smell malts, dark malts some roastyness and a lot of coffee. Taste malts, a tremendous amount coffee and roastyness, slightly cocoa, some earth and bitter. A bit too much coffee for me though it has quite a nice balance. Medium body and carbonation.

Keg at Craft Islington.Ultra strong coffee smell and taste. But more like coffee grinds. Not much else. Nice but one dimensional. I quite liked it, but it was quite predictable.

500 ml bottle.
Pours a black colour with a small head. Aroma of roasted malts, smoked wood and roasted coffee. Flavour of strong roasted malts, salty licorice, smoked wood and almonds. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and high carbonation. Quite unbalanced.
