2.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 8/20
500 ml bottle. Pours dark brown with tan head that fades to thin layer. Aroma of coffee, tastes like burnt coffee and alcoholic fruit. Dry coffee aftertaste. Unfortunately I don’t like coffee but I am sure coffee drinkers would love it.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A very nice pour with a cream color head. Pretty good flavor but I can never get past a beer that tastes like someone added a pot of coffee to the secondary. I prefer the flavor coming from the malts and not the addition of coffee beans. Overall still a good beer, poured on tap at The Trappist.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at the Trappist. It pours a very nice dark ruby red with khaki foam. The aroma is earthy, woody hops. A tad floral with some red fruit and a decent amount of coffee. Very refined. The flavor is huge coffee and earthiness with some strong floral/spicy hops. Some caramel and molasses. A complex and tasty brew. The mouthfeel is very full.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at The Trappist, Oakland. Pours very dark brown with an attractive clinging tan head and a coffee aroma. There is a hearty coffee and treacle flavor with a bit of anise and a dry finish. Very tasty.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at cookie. Great, complex beer. Aroma of coffee beans, chocolate, and toast. Taste is sweet and bitter, with hints of sourness, and long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampled from bottle at the darkroom in Christchurch. The only issue being that it was dark and I couldn’t see the colour of the beer, but needless to say: it was dark. The beer was also served a little colder than I’d like and I had to let it sit for a while in my hand to bring out the full array of aromas and flavours. To that end, the aroma of coffee was at once strong, but not dominant. There was lovely chocolate and caramel underneath with dates and steamed pudding scents. That lovely roastiness returned in the flavour and while it was cold, the coffee too a back seat to chocolate and pudding again. There’s a good sweetness to it and very gentle bitterness. There was fruitcake in the enduring finish. While it was cold I was musing: so often coffee is too dominant and there is very little balance to beers with coffee in them. I thought this may have overcompensated, but as it warmed the coffee came back out and balanced nicely. A touch on the expensive side, this beer, but then quality shouldn’t come cheap.

Just realised I am going from tea (Yeastie Gunnamatta) to coffee. Massive coffee aromas, and pours nice and dark. This beer has length that just lingers and lingers in the back palate. Not that I drink coffee, but it wins on the day.
