COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In my opinion, coffee rivals beer for the title of "greatest beverage in the world". I often say that I would rather give up beer than coffee. So it is only natural that we would attempt to make a beverage that incorporates both. If we were to succeed, surely this would then become the greatest beverage in the world? After years of research and trials in the garage, I have come up with what I think is the perfect marriage of coffee and beer: A hoppy double brown ale, that compliments both the roasty and fruity aspects of the coffee without putting up too much of a fight. The coffee was selected in collaboration with the Christchurch institution C4 Coffee and consists mainly of lightly roasted, delicate and floral, Ethiopian beans. Worlds are colliding and, in my humble opinion, greatness is achieved on the other side.

HOPS: Pacific Jade, NZ Cascade and Pacifica

MALT: Gladfield Pale, Crystal, Munich, Caramalt, Chocolate, Oats

YEAST: Wyeast 1272 - American Ale II

Bottle. Clear brown appearance with low carbonation and a small head. Chocolate like coffee flavour dominates but doesn’t take over. Perhaps a novelty beer but still a superb one.

Not bad. Not really sensing the coffe flavour in it but getting a real good taste anyway. Would be good with spicy food.

BOTTLE. Shared RW. Cola brown in colour with small beige head. Coffee is real strong on the nose. Malty up front with the coffee just kicking your taste buds, finishing very strong and thick with a burnt malt & bitter finish.

Bottle from beer and cider bar, Bangkok. Pours quite a dark brown with thick tanned head. Aroma is lots of coffee, bitter cocoa and burnt toast. Taste is of lots of coffee so no surprises there. Really nice and smooth. I’d try this again I’d I could find it a bit cheaper. Think it cost £10+ from memory.

Bottle. Pours a clear-ish red color with a fine one-finger off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel and coffee. Taste is of toasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, fruits, hops and not surprisingly - lots of coffee. Medium body and carbonation. Sweet but with a bitter coffee & hops finish. It’s like it has a bit of tartness too...but that could just be the coffee and hops confusing me. Okay.

bartlebier (1872) - Belchum im Breisgau, GERMANY - SEP 12, 2014
Bottle pour@5e Mondial de la Bière, Mulhouse - FR. Deep acajou-brown beer. Heavy coffee-infused aroma, plus malt candy and rum. Tastes as harshly coffee-centered as Kahlua on the rocks, with the only redeeming elements a powdery bitter chocolate, concentrated hop bitterness in the style of US barley wines and a rum barrel edge. Astringent bean & berry bitterness. All ingredients vying for attention like hyperactive toddlers. Quite unbalanced in that sense, for a brown ale.

50 cl. bottle, my Brown Ale # 50. Dark brown colour with a slight reddish hue. Dense, lightly tanned head. Sweet aroma with heavy coffee impression, toffee, chocolate, toasted malts - even cream - and fruity notes. Taste is sweet. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Long lasting dry finish with lots of coffee, a slight bitterness with citrus, chocolate and fruits. Excellent, rather heavy brown ale. Definitely something for the coffee lover.
