We believe HopWired is the first bottled version of a true new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown base malt and 100% truly unique NZ hops. We bet you’ll find nothing else like it on the shelves. Although the malty sweetness is there, this beer is all about the hops. Unlike an American I.P.A. which will mainly hit you with a grapefruity-citrus flavour and aroma, the unique NZ hops used in HopWired are more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, lime, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? Who has ever smelled a gooseberry?? Decide for yourself or just enjoy it without further complications. Cheers!

Yellowish, rather thick head, fast gone over metallic copper-golden beer. Floral & fruity hops dominating the nose. Lots of citrus, pure hopoils. Bitter, fruity. Hops again dominating truly everything. Malt backbone utterly missing, in a way that the CO² acitidy is the only other thing to taste and feel Thinnish, feels very carbonated, slightly burning MF. Unidimensional, overhopped, no balance; not really convincing.

Bottle (clearly passed its prime). Pours dark amber copper color with a big sudsy off white head that settles and shows big sticky lacing. Aroma is sweet bitter dry hops and caramel malt with faint spice. Taste has a big caramel malty flavor with the hops being very muted and dry with pine muted grapefruit and pepper like spice. Palate is full sticky and drying. I know this comes from New Zealand, but if a fresh bottle could be had I would love to try again.

Every bit as hoppy as the American IPAs I usually drink, but obviously made with completely different varieties of hops. While the aromatic hoppy nose and flavors (light and playfully fruity) were all there, all the bitterness was somewhow...smooth, pillowy. Not a touch of harshness, although the IBUs are definitely still there. Delicious and easy to drink - excellent!

Bottle sample @ 2nd RBBSG, August 11th 2012. Courtesy of Bart.

A really good ipa. The Aroma drives you in all directions tropical as promised on the bottle but just so great and the aftertaste is excellent.

500ml bottle (Drink Shop. Tallinn)
Very typical IPA aroma, nice hoppiness, a little bit of syrupy fruitiness, some darker caramelly aspects too. Perhaps too sweet? Decent orange, lovely proud persistent tight doughy head. Slightly buttery and herbal bitter retronasals. Fullish palate, but not as sweet and sticky as I expected from the aroma. Fairly simple IPA taste, decent balance between the lightly roasted malts, with their butter, and the sweet fleshy fruit hops. Good bitter bite too, some grapefruitiness, some earthiness too. Late finish has some more classic aromatic citrus. Very solid IPA, but without the magical yummy hook that some have. Covers the alcohol very well. Well crafted, and matched my hot summer curry very well.
