We believe HopWired is the first bottled version of a true new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown base malt and 100% truly unique NZ hops. We bet you’ll find nothing else like it on the shelves. Although the malty sweetness is there, this beer is all about the hops. Unlike an American I.P.A. which will mainly hit you with a grapefruity-citrus flavour and aroma, the unique NZ hops used in HopWired are more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, lime, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? Who has ever smelled a gooseberry?? Decide for yourself or just enjoy it without further complications. Cheers!

Bomber from Hayduke. This is clear and coppery with moderate carbonation visible. As clean a citrus nose as I have encountered. Caramel and cinnamon. Bright citrus hops are so nice. It is not grapefruit flavored and has a very different bitterness. Various fruots are tasted and they are somehow very tight. Nice caramel and a hint of spice rounds this out. A superb IPA.

From Bottle. Aroma: Sweet passionfruit, gooseberry. Flavors are like the aroma with some pear on the finish. A bit sweet. A very good IPA.

Impressive Kiwi IPA. Not excessive bitterness and great herbal flavour nicely combined. Couldn’t taste the gooseberries though (whatever they are).

A steady pour into my New Belgium Globe glass produces a two finger thick, pale tan colored head that leaves lots of lacing stuck to the sides of my glass. The beer is an light amber tinged, gold color that shows a brilliantly clear, bright, rich, yellow-gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma is hop dominated with an interesting mix of tropical fruit and spice notes; musky melon, tropical fruit, over-ripe citrus, lots of lychee, guava, musky mango, as well as peppery notes, ginger, funky herbal notes, and dank herbaceousness all play a prominent role here in the nose. As the beer warms up it gets more fruit balanced in its hoppiness, which makes it more balanced overall in the nose.

The flavor is fairly dry, but amply hoppy; it has a lingering, dank, herbal, slightly woody, and smoothly bitter finish to it. Up front a dank herbal character mixes with a funky, almost musky fruit hop character; these provide flavors of woody pepper, musky tropical fruit, lychee, really floral notes, lots of dank weed notes, an almost rosemary, or other turpene laden herbal woody character, and a green onion / garlic chive like flavor is also found here. As the beer warms up more of the tropical fruit character starts to come out, but this is still quite dank. Light bodied and quaffable, but still has a substantial quality to the body.

This is a really nice IPA, as much for the interesting mix of hop flavors than anything; I always really like an opportunity to try new hop mixes in an IPA, and I think this is the first I have had that is a mix of New Zealand hops (Pacific Jade, Motueka, and Nelson Sauvin). Just enticing, interesting and ultimately fantastic, but you must like funky, dank hops.

Amber coloured, very clear beer. First taste is hoppy, in a bittersweet way. Taste lingers long after swallowing.. I love this beer, especially on a hot summer afternoon!
