COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We believe HopWired is the first bottled version of a true new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown base malt and 100% truly unique NZ hops. We bet you’ll find nothing else like it on the shelves. Although the malty sweetness is there, this beer is all about the hops. Unlike an American I.P.A. which will mainly hit you with a grapefruity-citrus flavour and aroma, the unique NZ hops used in HopWired are more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, lime, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? Who has ever smelled a gooseberry?? Decide for yourself or just enjoy it without further complications. Cheers!

Cloudy apricot pour, off white head. Good resinous and grapefruit peel aroma. Flavor is a nice balance of bitter hops and some caramel malt. Good good stuff!

Moderate sized tan head, retention is fair, lace is spotty, stringy and fairly lasting. Seriously hazy orange amber color, just butt ugly. Nose is decent, spicey, juicey with some pine and honey notes, light breadyness. Body is medium, light resinous notes, light oilynes, little sticky. Hoppy flavors up front, citrus and stone fruits, lightly tropical, a bit yeasty, bready with some pale and caramel malts lingering about. Finish is almost dry fruity but in need of a bit more bite, for me. Bottle procured @statelineliquors,,,, and not cheap either.

11-FEB-2011, bottle @home, with Ulkløbben, from "Fish & Beer". Served blind with To Øl, First Frontier IPA. Loads of minerals, very piney, sweet malty and bitter with a very long finish. Fine IPA. Really liked this, and my first NZ-brew.

Bottle. Pours murky amber, medium off-white head, spotty lacing. Nose is grapefruit, spruce, caramel/toffee. Really quite like the balance on the nose here. Flavours of grapefruit, spruce, metal, but too sweet. Really falls apart in the mouth, but a cool IPA nonetheless.

The overtly soupy dull pour looks very uninviting. I think the soupiness also gives a very unusualy homebrew style finish, nice but needs a filtering

pineypower (2189) - Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA - MAR 5, 2011
Bottle thanks to Dmac, via EZ liquors. Pours out an ugly, murky apple cider color with a small lacing head. Aroma is of odd perfumy notes, some citrus, and strange floral notes. Taste is floral notes, some orange, acidic grapefruits, some lingering sweetness in there also. Definitely not your typical hop, but this was quite interesting.

ClubGonzo (2764) - Bergen, NORWAY - MAR 5, 2011
Bottle, courtesy of Zoney via Meilby. Pours out a murky, near-grey body with a small white head. This does not look too inviting; perhaps the long journey from NZ caused it? Aroma is extremely fruity but a tad bit too sweet for my liking: kiwi, rose water, citrus. Taste is surprisingly mild and equally fruity but more grassy and hoppy, with a hay-like bitter grassy aftertaste. A bit strange, and not my favorite style of IPA. Decent, though.

Zing is what I’d use to describe this beer. Very hoppy, lots of hop aroma in there. I like the fact that it’s not totally clear. Very fresh, like opening a fresh bag of hops. It’d be nice to have a little more complexity but it lives up to the l label’s "its all about the hops"claim. If you like a hoppy zing then give this ago.
