We believe HopWired is the first bottled version of a true new world India Pale Ale made with NZ grown base malt and 100% truly unique NZ hops. We bet you’ll find nothing else like it on the shelves. Although the malty sweetness is there, this beer is all about the hops. Unlike an American I.P.A. which will mainly hit you with a grapefruity-citrus flavour and aroma, the unique NZ hops used in HopWired are more like a tropical punchbowl: Passion fruit, lime, oranges and Sauvignon Blanc to name but a few. A local Marlborough winemaker said it smelled like gooseberries... Gooseberries? Who has ever smelled a gooseberry?? Decide for yourself or just enjoy it without further complications. Cheers!

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2012 Bottle courtesy of Evin from Kernel Brewery, some kind Kiwi dropped it off there. However, this followed a glass of I Hardcore You so my tastebuds may not have been on top form. Poured a pale amber with an off white head. The nose was great, lots of fruits, typical of NZ hops. We guessed there were some pacific gem involved? Also a little grassiness and hint of caramel sweetness. Flavor did not live up to the aroma, the hops were still there but dulled by the alcohol and sweetness. I found it a little thin, hot and astringent in the finish. Not a bad beer by any means, just needs a little finesse.Re-rate: much more fresh this time. Still some caramel, heat and sweetness but theres much more complex piney, fruity hop in the flavor. The Nelson just sings...Awesome, just goes to show how freshness can make all the difference and how we should all make the effort to visit the source over foreign bottles! Previously 3.2 6/3/5/3/15

Okay white head and orange body. Farty aroma, hay funk, a bit of lemon juice in there. A bit of skunk cabbage in there too, sauerkraut maybe. Flavour is sharp grapefruit with a hint of booze. Dry finish. Not bad, but that aroma is kinda funky.

I do not wax on poetically about beer but I do know the quality of a beer once tasted. This review is not about my tastes but reinforces the numbers, which are arbitrary.

Bottle from Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Pours clear golden with an off white head. Nice gooseberry aroma. The taste is nice and hoppy with grapefruit citrus and pine. Good caramel malt backing it up. Great beer with a lingering bitter finish.

500 mL bottle. Slightly hazed copper / amber pour. Big hop aroma, dank pine, resin, tropical fruit. Fair bit of caramel malt in the taste, still lots of tropical fruit with some dankness.

A supreme IPA. I had read about this beer many times, and I’m not sure how fresh this bottle is, but it is fantastic . A green tropical fruit aroma, not as sweet as a US hopped IPA , with kiwi and lime balancing out the grapefruit and mango. This drinks very easily , and although there are lots of bubbles in the glass, doesn’t taste too fizzy.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a clear gold with a finger of white foam that lingers throughout. Lots of passionfruit, lychee, gooseberry and sudachi in the nose with some weed notes as it warms. Body is well-balanced with just enough caramel malt to keep it interesting. Nice, bitter finish but not overly bitter. Could drink this all night. It gets a little bit of gooseberry, lemony tartness on the finish with some citrusy zest. Excellent beer.
