Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Bottle. Black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of milk chocolate and prunes. More complex in the mouth with the chocolate and stewed fruit notes mixing with dark roast coffee, vanilla, and earth. A bit ashy on the finish. Solid, albeit a bit stale.

10% ABV Very thick sweet syrupy nose redolent of plums. First mouthful is strongly alcoholic, syrupy, sweet, smoky and peaty with a finish reminiscent of old leather. Tastes just like an Imperial stout. Full bodied and gravid. Very similar and in intensity identical to the Abstrakt 10. As you continue drinking, there the bitterness becomes more intense and the nose approaching that of a nice traditional wheat soy sauce, like Tamari. You have to almost inhale past this salty first impression to get the plums and dates that you had first. This I believe is a function of the alcohol content progressively blunting the olfaction, For me a single pint experience. Rips the guts out of everything else and fills me up so quickly that I’m good for little else after. I find myself craving something greasy, like some nicely grilled bonjiri or chicken skin. Goes on Favorites List

On tap @ Csakajósör - Very dark colour with a massive creamy brown head. Nice aroma of coffee, some burnt bread crust and dark chocolate. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation and a thick texture. It finds the balance betwen hoppy bitterness and roasted malty aromas. Long dry finish with a desire for one more :)

Shared bottle. Pitch black with small light brown head. Marzipan, lots of roasted malts, molasses, dark chocolate pudding, fresh citrusy hops. Taste is medium to strong sweet with medium to strong roasted and hoppy bitter finish. Body is quite a bit short of full, which doesn’t really work well with the bitter finish for me. Otherwise really good RIS.

Wow. Stout is not my favourite brew, but this was like a Willy Wonka brew. Or maybe an Every Flavour Jelly Bean from Harry Potter. Complex. Dominant flavours were burnt chocolate and coffee. Give this to a hardcore Guinees man and watch his reaction. I can’t wait. At 10% alcohol, it will be a fairly quick burning fuse
