Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

On tap @ Beer Temple. Black color. Beige head, good lacing. Aroma’s: resinous hops, roasted malts, with chocolate and some fruit (citrus) retronasal. Flavor is roasted, moderate bitter, moedrate sweet, resinous hops. Medium bodied. Alcocol certainly doesn’t feel like 10.5%. Finishes with bittersweet chocolate, roast, and moderate bitter. Nice!

Draft. A big beer indeed. Thick lasting taste of roasted malt, dark cacao, rough coffee and subtle vanilla. Rich aftertaste. Really good.

Pours black with tall, thick. frothy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, molasses, muscovado, slight bourbon barrel notes. Taste is creamy chocolate followed by rich dark chocolate and coffee bitter finish. Body is full, smooth and creamy, with soft carbonation. A very good beer of course, but I had hoped for more.

Imperial stout from a Danish brewer who has moved to New Zealand. Dark beige, creamy, thin but very stable head, colour black, only under bright light a faint wine-red hue appears. Rich and complex aroma, profoundly malty, bitter and milk chocolate, freshly ground coffee beans, vanilla, candi syrup, dates, sage, coffee liqueur, bourbon. Candied fruits in the mouth, almost sweet, smooth, thick and very oily mouthfeel, deep chocolate malts, heavy but still supple, increasingly bitter towards the finish, ending like cold black coffee with a firm dose of leafy hop bitterness and some warming, but not astringent, liqueur-like alcohol, nicely perfumed. Multi-layered, very impressive example of the style, in which things keep happening from the first whiff to the last drop. An example for any brewer aspiring to make a really good imperial.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet Sørlandssenteret. Pours pitch black. Some brown head if you pour it really vigorously. Plum, red fruit, roasted coffee and alcohol nose. Thick body. Warming alcohol. Low carbonation. Dry ending. Sweet, but with an overwhelming bitterness. Red fruit, grapefruit, roasted malt and coffee flavour. Too heavy in my opinion.

Bottle at home from Martins Fairview. Pours deep black with tan head. The aroma is apparent from the off. Huge chocolate notes (40% cocoa), coffee roast, lactose, woody oak. Flavour follows nose - lots of milk, creamy coffee, liquorice with an alcohal sting on the finish. Thick big body. Very good.

Pours a viscous-looking black body with a long-lived, medium brown head that laces the glass well. Malty, sweet, roasted, delicious and very strong aroma with all the elements I love in a perfect imperial stout: lots of dark caramel and chocolate with firm but not overwhelming notes of coffee. I also get vanilla in the back, together with hints of wood and bark. The flavour is strong with notes of dark caramel, chocolate, coffee and a tad too much alcohol, salty liquorice and soy sauce in the back. There are also some herbal hints in the long-lasting, heavy bitter finish. This moderate sweet beer has a full body, oily texture and soft carbonation. Brilliant beer!
