Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Glorious impy stout that shouldn’t be drunk on such a glorious sunny day as today. Even though scorching outside this is a glorious impy stout. In contrast to my other favourites in this genre this is more delicate and should I say it thin because it lacks that rich sugary impy goodness than most have, though it does however make up for it in how balanced this beer is. So balanced this could be my new summer beer! Given the temp outside the icecream floater may have been a great option!

Sehr gut!

Bottle from Asahiya, shared by my buddy David at a dark beer tasting. A dark black pour with a touch of brown around the edges. A sweet chocolatey syrupy sweet pour. Full bodied, roasty bitter chocolate. Quite a good stout. A roasty bitter wine like taste

500ml bottle shared @ BrewDog. Very dark brown, not much head. Treacle alcohol aroma. Fruity alcohol flavour. Strong treacle alcohol aftertaste. Not my sort of beer.

This beer is so smooth it is like licking velvet. Bitter chocolate & coffee is balanced against just the right amount of alcohol. A very, very good stout. Rated by BrewTom

50cl bottle from brewdog online store. Color is quite dark. Head is thin and brown. Body is quite smooth but still some fizzyness here. Bitterness is medium to high. Some sweetness in here. Aroma is high roasted, some fruit, coffee, alcohol, liquor, light chocolate.

500 mL bottle from LCBO served cool in a tulip glass. Deep brown-black with a decent mocha head. Deep, dark and peppery, molasses, dark-roasted coffee, dark chocolate, a touch of licorice, very big. Medium-full body with relaxed effervescence. Similar to the nose with a big, rich, peppery maltiness, lots if roasted barley and molasses, alcohol is nicely integrated, deep bread crust, very big; somewhat sweet with good bitterness, some alcohol and a long, deep, dark, slightly peppery finish. Apple does it again...

On tap @ Pomeroy. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Black coloured with a thin, off-white head. The taste was sweet roasty with a nice bitter finish. All aroma’s coming through nicely in the taste. Full & creamy.

Black like stout should be. Nice aroma of roasted malts, really pleasant. Bitterness is well balanced by roasted malts and hops. Not so intense as Angels share from Lost abbey, that I had before.

Black pour with a thin tan head. Heavily roasted malts on the nose with notes of coffee and cocoa. Flavor is similar with the roasty character dominating the palate. Finish is slightly bitter but it seems more bitter from the dark roasted malts than hop bitterness to me. Pretty good, although a bit drier than I was expecting.
