Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap - the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

Bottle from Vinmonopolet, Kvadrat. Pours almost black with a big creamy tanned head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, hard roasted malts, liquorice and tar. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Taste is light sweet, lots of chocolate, some light salty liquorice, hard roasted malts, a very good and complex IS.

Bottled 500ml. -from Svijet Piva Zagreb. Deep black coloured, small to medium sized brown head, roasty alcoholic nose. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, dried fruits and licorice with light alcoholic and smokey/ashy notes. Again chocolate in the finish. Really nice one.

Aged 2yrs. Pours very dark with a mocha brown head that rapidly dissipated to leave a minor ring of foam that clings to my glass. The aroma is very rich of sweet carmel roasted malts. I noticed chocolate, hints of licorice, and an espresso like scent. In tasting I noticed semi sweet malted grains that do not linger one bit, the flavor is overwhelmed by bitter cocoa, the remnant notes of roasted coffee, and old hop resins. The finish lingered of bitter tasting qualities that were a tad too dominating for my liking. Overall it was still a good brew but not one that deserves aging.

Pours black with a dark tan head. Nose shows chocolate and bready malt, fairly sweet-smelling. Some booze underneath along with a hint of liquorice. Big, roasty flavours. More liquorice and cocoa along with heaps of roasted malt. Some booze. Fairly sharp.

Dark brown, black in glass, creamy tanned head. Smell of toast, roast, chocolate and dark malts. Medium sweet, roast, toast, chocolate. Moderate bitter finish. A safe choice for an imperial stout; no one will be offended by selecting this

Bottle. A very nice imperial stout - thick, rich and full of flavour. Lots of sweetness, with chocolate and red fruit notes, but a bitter edge too. Very roasty, some coffee and cocoa, and a touch of hops to bring a brightness to it at the end.

Pours nearly solid black with only a hint of ruby around the margins, a short finger of dense chocolate brown head with great retention, moderate lacing. Nose is somewhat muted, coffee and dark chocolate, dark roasted malt, faint vanilla. Taste is dark roasted malt, coffee, light vanilla, ending mildly bitter. Full bodied and viscous, with mild sustained carbonation and a mild bitter finish. A very nice example of the Imperial Stout / RIS style. Suffers only very slightly by comparison to the Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel I had immediately before it - a little less smooth and rich, but only barely, and possessing a little more typical coffee astringency. All that said, still a helluva fine beer, and a helluva lot cheaper than the Mikkeller! (Yes, I’m marking it down for the stupid name.)

A really good stout. Aromas of dark chocolate, burnt malts, booze, some red fruit. Flavors are dark and bitter chocolate with lots of roasted malts. Some licorice and berries. Sweet and bitter. Excellent.
