3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
500ml bottle (ALEhouse, Riga, MelnaZiema2013)
Looks the part - dark, and with a dark, tight head. Bacony roast - yum, love that aroma! A touch sweet and buttery in the mouth. Slightly messy retronasals. Slight burn on the tongue from both the roast and the alcohol. A touch ashy but still a very nice tingle in the finish. Acidic hoppiness. Starts so good, but a bit harsh.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle couresy of gethinbeer. Thanks boss. Pitch black pour with a thick brown head and a touch of stickiness. The aroma has a touch of licorice and charred black roast and a bit of dried fruit as well. Complex malt bill through the middle of the palate with a lot of bitter cocoa, sweet dark caramel malt and some salty licorice character. Rich and decadent with a great sticky palate and a lingering bitter chocolate finish. Unctuous palate with a great silkiness to the palate leaning towards oatmealy. Some tobacco and other herbal notes - lightly peppery with a touch of earthiness as well. Despite all of the richness, there is an almost lightness to this brew in terms of the cleanliness and the balance. Damn - I could drink this all day and night.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours thick with a black body and a tan head. Good retention and lace. Aroma are show a surprisingly big herbal character. Chocolate, cocoa, light hints of dark fruits, medium esters, lots of dark chocolate, raisins, pine, and fudge. No phenols, diacetyl or otherwise. Earthy, biscuity and some pie crusts with the malt profile. Very thick on the palate. Flavors of earth, peppery, a hint astringent from the dark roast. Bitter, chocolate. Bitter balance overall. Malty, woody, coffee, woodsie notes. Some tobacco. Could use a touch more malt sweetness for my palate. Creamy, full bodied, thick and velvety. Medium to light carbonation. Quite warming. Tasty.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Small very dark-greige hed over practically black-brown beer. Lots of dark chocolate, bitter & sweet, tad of coffee and a volatile whiff of ammonia-like smell; maltsyrup. Chocolate, very bitter; maltcookies, +/- sweet in the background, chocolate-covered. Tiny bit of ashes, green leaves as holly. Chocolate lingers on. Warming up, maltsweetness appearing in force.Very slighlty burning MF; full bodied and viscous-slick; well-carbonated. Nice, if not really spectacular stout.
