My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2013 Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - many thanks to Josh. Pours clear amber with a foamy head. Nose has caramel, bread, some pine. Medium sweet flavor, toasty grass, caramel, dried berries. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish, more grass, pine, some toasty bread, orange rind. Alright. (3.6)

Sampled at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013 - Day 2, Session 2. Pours cloudy, ruby-brown with a light, creamy head. Big and sugary with notes of pine, ripe fruits, caramel and toasted bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming at the end with sticky sugars, bitter pine, alcohol and ripe orange. A bit hot and bitter. Kind of rough around the edges. (3.3)

(330ml bottle) Purchased at Hillside Liquors. Pours a thin white frothy head atop a deep brown. Nose of rich fig blended malt and coffee grounds. Boozy, nice thick malt base with decent hop resin. Not overly sweet but with a lasting alcoholic linger. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2015 An interesting beer that combines the appearance of a strong brown ale with the taste profile of a smoky porter/stout. A great way to end a tasting session (as it’s too strong to have too many of - unfortunately).

Bottle. Extremely deep dark maroon, purple, brown color, small but thick tan head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, figs, plums, slightly burnt caramel. Taste is sweet and strong winter fruit with bitter resiny finish and substantial body. Very tasty. A big beer.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours black with a fluffy, khaki head. Aroma of oaky vanilla, smoke, dry wood, earthy notes and chocolate. Touch of dried fruits and nuts. Taste is smoky vanilla, medicinal notes and a resin hop flavour. Bit of warmth on the way down and a nice lasting bitterness. Interesting brew, worth a try for sure.

Dark burnt tangerine pour with a small eggshell head that left a spot or two inside of the glass. Caramel, toffee, toasted marshmallow, smoke, vanilla, and hops. Interesting combination. Sweet but not cloying. The alcohol is present but isn’t distracting. A bit thick and syrupy. Not bad.

11.2oz bottle. Mostly clear dark red color. Little khaki head. Couple small dots of lace. Big caramel, spicy malts up front. Some bitter, earthy spicy hop, but malts are prominent. Moderate sweet taste, with a bigger alcohol bite. Big body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly dry finish. Nice moderate smoke in the finish noticeable more as it warms up. Hints of chocolate. Interesting, complex, but a little boozy and sweet.

Bottle pour deep amber color. Nose very barleywine like with loads of sweet malt, booze, and the faintest hint if smoke. Taste bracing bitter up front, then toffee, caramel, and sweet malt. Syrupy mouthfeel. Finish bitter with smoke. Very interesting beer, but didn’t love it.

Rich ugly brown colour. Aroma is caramel and toffee booming out. Taste is strong rich caramel with a thick mouthfeel. Mild bitterness at end, but interacting well between the caramel malt. Finish is a tad sticky sweet. Overall, a great beer, and one of my favourites from 8 Wired.
