My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

Rating #978 - February 14, 2014 - $11.79 CAD for a 330ml bottle 11%. Did not do my beer geek homework on this. Thought I was in for a really awesome DIPA. Pour did little to dissuade. Bubbly boozy amber pour with a decent white head. Aroma is citrusy hops and charred wood chips. Palate gathers most of this up, lots of toffee malt, citrus, pine, and a decent amount of wood smoke. An unexpected delight.

@ Havregatan. Flaska från Ölbutikken, Köpenhamn. Fruktig, maltig, karamell, alkohol, sötma, ganska besk, medelfyllig. Avslutningen är besk, fruktig och torr.

A dark red amber beer, with an average white head. The nose is very sweet, lots of alcohol, caramel, oak, malt and toffee. It is a full bodied beer with a no carbonation. In the taste there is oak, sweet, caramel, light smokey, alcohol and light bitter. The aftertaste is oak, bittersweet and alcohol. More a barleywine then an amerian ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark cream-coloured head over red-amber beer. Sweet-alcoholic, liqueurish and perfumed. Cheesy hints, strawberry. Bitterish, pine & resin, and a malt/syrupy underbuild. Again cheesy & fruity. Finish is sweet, if a tad astringent, with a flavour as from apricot liqueur. Quite well-bodied, very slick to nearly viscous/oily. Slight alcoholburn. Quite good barleywine, but it has a slight "beefed/pimped up" streak.

Dark mahogany color, small head. Sweet smoky taste, caramel malts and faint hops, sweet ripe fruits and sugar also. Sweet caramel flavor with oak, toffee, some ripe fruits with brown sugar and mild booze at the end. Very sweet sticky palate, mild alcohol burn. A slow sipper. Very nice.

330 ml bottle.
Pours a dark amber colour with a small head. Aroma of caramel, wooden notes, mild vanilla notes and biscuit. Rich flavour of caramel, some mint, wood, vanilla, biscuit, floral bitterness and berries. Mild smoked notes as well. Full bodied and oily mouthfeel. Heavy.

Bottle from Yamaichi. Pretty red-orange with lace. Winy, smoky, caramel, gum ball nose. Sweet, very smoky, sugars, rum, booze, very bitter, vanilla and caramel. Fun. Sweet but balanced by smoke, booze, hops. Very flavorful, could probably be better in a year. A bit too boozy.

Bottle to IPA glass. Aroma of brown sugar, grapefruit, oak, and pine. Cloudy amber with a creamy off white head but a bunch of particulates. Taste is heavy pine from beginning to end, with some sugar and a smoky bitter finish. The first taste was a bit overwhelming, but it’s getting better as I drink it. Maybe, that’s the 11% talking.

33 cl bottle @ home. Pours dark amber with an off-white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. Aroma and flavour are toffee, candy sugar, dried fruit, oak, and hops - with a bitter finish.
