COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.
Cheers – Søren Eriksen – Brewer
Hops - Pacific Jade, Chinook
Malt - Pale Ale, Munich, Special B
Yeast - US-05
Other - Manuka Smoke, Jaggery (raw sugar) and American Oak

From a 330ml bottle on 25/8/2013 (batch 103, BB March 18). Pours a slightly cloudy amber with a smallish head. Has a quite a strong aroma of caramel and toffee. This one is a huge malt bomb featuring caramel, toffee, butterscotch, nuts and toast. along with curious dash of fruitiness as well. The smoke is there but it’s quite subtle. Finishes off with a pronounced, almost medicinal, hop bitterness. This comes across as a very big beer, with the 11% quite evident. The palate is quite syrupy and the carbonation moderate. Not a subtle beer by any means, but there is a hell of a lot going on with it. A very full on, complex offering, which is unsurprising from these guys.

Bottle, 14C. Clear bronze with a pale beige head that lasts well. Aroma of toffee, smokey honey, figs and other dried fruit, hazelnuts, spices, alcohol. Syrupy but with a very pleasing creaminess. Rather sweet and quite boozy, although only a little hot. Toffee, dried fruit, nuts and orange peel. Spices build and the finish is lightly smokey with spices and honey. Bitterness is fairly discreet. Not a graceful drop (maybe it will mellow) but there’s lots going on and it hangs together. 330ml is a lot of this - not that I’m getting tired of it, just that it’s a slow drinker.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep copper, with a moderate off-white head, which does not last all that well but does leave good lacing. Savoury biscuit malt, spicy, fruity hops and a touch of smoke create the aroma. Spicy, peppery hops up front give way to a sweeter candied fruit flavour. Savoury nut and biscuit malt notes in the mid-palate blend with vanillin oak, with oak and smoke in the finish, which leaves a lingering warmth. This is quite a pleasant, flavoursome ale from a quality brewer.

330ml bottle. Cloudy dark brown, minimal cap, but the tight bubbles cascade off the sides. Aroma is pungent raisin, vanilla, root, wood. Taste is much the same, but with peach, and hay. A late-comer smokey dryness peeks in, but not sustained. Pretty boozy, but for the most part, it's just big, deep malts that drive this beast.

11.2 oz. bottle from Party Source. Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a thin off white film. The aroma is a bit different; caramel, smoke, dark fruits, some citrus and booze. The flavor opens with caramel and smoke before giving way to more dark fruit, citrus hops, earth with a moderately woody and bitter finish. Some booze to this as well. It has a lot going on, but everything doesn’t always play nicely together.

Aroma is thick and boozy with a lot of gooey, sweet malt and smoke, kind of like some kind of dessert made with whisky. Taste is same. A very warming drop, and if I were to drink it again it would be as a fireside whisky substitute.

Pours a very dark amber colour with little head. Sounds disgusting but the aroma reminds me of overripe banana - big rich and pungent. You can almost smell the sugar. I can understand why people have said barley wine. Palate is soft and cloying with good length. Can’t say I got much in the way of smokiness from this beer, but have to say it is one to savour.

Bottle - Roasted malts, some dark fruit and a little oak. Dark cloudy amber with a thin brown head. Lots of nice smoke, rich malts and oak. Big bitterness to match with a hop finish.. A great robust beer.

Bottle. Medium amber, slightly hazy, with a mediocre head that rises reluctantly but does stay around. Aroma is malty and fruity, with light smoke and oak notes. Flavours of sweet malt (caramel, toast), light smoke (almost peaty), oaky vanilla, sweet jammy fruit, and light leather. A little chewy, the mouthfeel is quite thick. The finish is assertively bitter. Great balance of flavours that held loads of appeal for me. Barleywine territory - delicious.

Big, bold and heavy. 330ml bottle from Archive. Pours dark colour with creamy yellow head, but seemed to diminish quickly. Pretty boozy and malty a bit like drinking liquid Vegemite, but it’s 8Wired so I did like. Much prefer Sorens IPA/2IPAs.
