My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

Big on everything, great with a hearty meal. Wood and smokey flavours take a nice back seat. Big malt

A good year in the bottle it is high time to crack this one. At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Settles a shady and misted deep chestnut with a well held, cappuccino foam atop. A hint of play doh™ precedes some hefty, peated whisky notes that are boozy and piercingly spicy. There is oak, vanillin, burnt caramel and nutty toffee, savoury dried fruit like raisins and muscatels but it is that aroma of Islay Singles that dominates. Viscous and oily body. Quite some depth. A lot of that aroma coming through with huge whisky notes (not a whisky barrel aged beer so weird!) with vanillin, oak, blackbutt honey and fortified port-like notes. Woody nutty and earthy mid-palate. Long, smoky and peated finish with enough booze to give you heart-burn. A lengthy ale and quite an adventure but one was enough. (33cL, no date stamp, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

On tap at CBC 2013, Saturday evening, spices, wood and alcohol on the nose, a huge alcohol bite, woody and bitter with a roasty syrupy character and barleywine notes.

330ml bottle. Pours a hazy deep copper, with a moderate off-white head, which does not last all that well but does leave good lacing. Savoury biscuit malt, spicy, fruity hops and a touch of smoke create the aroma. Spicy, peppery hops up front give way to a sweeter candied fruit flavour. Savoury nut and biscuit malt notes in the mid-palate blend with vanillin oak, with oak and smoke in the finish, which leaves a lingering warmth. This is quite a pleasant, flavoursome ale from a quality brewer.

Bottle pour deep amber color. Nose very barleywine like with loads of sweet malt, booze, and the faintest hint if smoke. Taste bracing bitter up front, then toffee, caramel, and sweet malt. Syrupy mouthfeel. Finish bitter with smoke. Very interesting beer, but didn’t love it.

Bottle @tasting. Pours brown, malty sweetness to the nose with some smoke there as well. Fruity on the tongue but with a big smoke flavour, you also get a big alcohol hit, you know this one is 11%. Also right at the end you get this yeasty bread flavour.

330ml bottle. Clear ruby red color. Alcohol, malty, caramel, sweetish notes in aroma. Roast, malty, hazelnuts, mild coffee in taste. Coffee in aftertaste. It’s bit raw, but still very drinkable.
