My idea of a strong ale was brewed with loads of malt, hops, jaggery and a touch of manuka smoke.
It was fermented with a clean ale yeast to let the ingredients speak for themselves without getting interrupted by too many esters.
After all that it was aged for 5 months on American oak, then refermented in the bottle.

Aroma is rather sweet, malty and somewhat boozy with caramel and resiny American hops. Also some vanilla tones. Flavour is sweet with oaky tones, caramel, some alcohol and vanilla. Finishes with harsh maltyness. Syrupy, sweet but still kind of nice. There’s even some smoky tones on some sips.

This is a huge beer and is appropriately named. Almost syrupy texture. Pours red amber with a beige head. Smells super sweet with some stonefruit and citrus. The taste is of sticky toffee and caramel with a pine citrus fruity finish. It’s dangerously printable despite the 11% abv. Slightly oily with low carbonation.

From a 33 cl bottle shared at home. Pours a hazy cola brown with an ecru head. Aroma of caramel. Flavors of carramel, dark fruits, oak and some smoky notes. Complex and hot. Boozy finish.,

Appearance is somewhat dodgy with mead-like copper color and almost no head. Aroma has a lot of liquorice, at least at a cold temperature. Taste is has a in-your-face type of feel. Palate is heavy but the absent of alcohol is a good thing. A very good beer but not really my cup of tea.

bottle. clear amber brown, smooth light brown head. seriously dark for an ipa style ale. aroma is malts, caramel, bitter hops, candi sugar. flavor is roasted malts, bitter hops, wood, licorice, smoked notes from the manuka. Pretty intesresting brew, does not resemble anything else i’ve tasted for a long while.

Sample at the Badge-Whore Bowl (OSU vs AL) tasting on 01/01/2015. Clear amber color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily. Strings of lacing. Aroma of smoked malt, hops and oak. Full-bodied with flavors of charred malt, dark fruit and oak. The finish is smoky with a fruity and malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Pours a clear, rusty brown with no head. Aromas of caramel, oak, and forest floor. Flavours of caramel, oak and a hint of smoke. Surprisingly little alcohol until late in the finish.

12oz bottle, poured into 16oz tulip glass

Aroma: sweet, almost bourbon-like, alcohol, toffee, maybe butterscotch, slight vanilla

Appearance: brown, cloudy, minimal tan head

Taste: medium sweet, slight bitterness on finish

Palate: medium to full body, average carbonation

Overall: Was taking a NZ friend on a tour of local store, he pointed out that this was from one of the NZ breweries and since I can’t remember ever having a NZ beer before, I picked it up. Very boozy. Have no idea how old the bottle is, could have sat on the shelf for a year or more. Interesting brown color with loads of barrel/oak flavors. Big aroma and taste of alcohol. Very smooth, no harsh bite, but a big ABV. A very nice high ABV, oak barrel aged beer.

Bottle. Wine with some smoked, a lot of other shades (malts, fruits, oak, pepper etc.), very impressive ale.
