COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
”Poor old misunderstood brown ale... This is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, yet it is often frowned upon, but why? Is it because the word BROWN doesn’t cling right, perhaps it leads the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour BROWN is less snazzy than, say ’golden’?? Or is it because the duopoly of NZ brewing have driven the BROWN style into oblivion by claiming the style for their most unattractive products??? We’ll let you think about that while you sip this beer, either in the sun on the beach or in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and cheese pie, with your Sunday roast or just by itself because you are thirsty and deserve a treat! Chances are this is unlike any Brown Ale you have ever tasted, it is malty, hoppy and flavourful. Some might say it is Brown Ale re-defined, we’d say it’s REWIRED. Cheers!”

16oz bottle from New Zealand, damn dogg! Far away place if there ever was one, other than like Pluto or something. Dark brown in color with a finger width of tan head and some lacing. Nice aroma, nutty and roasty with coffee notes. The flavor is definitely to the roasty and bitter side of the style. Coffee grounds and just a mild nuttiness. Medium-bodied and well-carbonated. A great brown ale.

Bottle. Pours with a kind of lightish hue for a brown ale. Clear, deep bronze with a bit of red highlights. Medium sized off-white head with good retention and lace. Aromas are of hops: grape, marmalade, stonefruit, light citrus, blackberry (maybe some brambling cross?), some brown sugar, molasses, light roast. Medium grain/cereal character, toffee, light esters. Flavors are grainy, hoppy, fruity, floral, lychee, citrusy, medium bitter. Lots of tea like notes as well. Earthy, light toffee. Medium bubbles, somewhat dry with a lingering bitterness and a fuller body.

Angenehm malzröstiger geruch mit zitrusartigem Hopfenton. Startet malzröstig. Mitte noch röstiger, prickelnd und im Hintergrund hopfenaromatisch. Schokoladig, trockenbitter abgehend. Gut.

On Draft. Aroma: Fruity, orange, light-medium licorice and coffee Palate: Initially smooth turning to bitter. Full-bodied. Flavor: Initial flavors of ripe orange and tropical fruit with chocolate notes are followed by a surge of hops, assisted by carbonation, on the mid-palate. The finish becomes increasingly dry with rising bitterness and licorice and charred coffee flavors. Comments: Perhaps Brown Ale is misunderstood. What I’ve had has been pretty bland and dull. But this has plenty of character with evolving flavors and texture, which, for me, means complexity.
