”Poor old misunderstood brown ale... This is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, yet it is often frowned upon, but why? Is it because the word BROWN doesn’t cling right, perhaps it leads the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour BROWN is less snazzy than, say ’golden’?? Or is it because the duopoly of NZ brewing have driven the BROWN style into oblivion by claiming the style for their most unattractive products??? We’ll let you think about that while you sip this beer, either in the sun on the beach or in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and cheese pie, with your Sunday roast or just by itself because you are thirsty and deserve a treat! Chances are this is unlike any Brown Ale you have ever tasted, it is malty, hoppy and flavourful. Some might say it is Brown Ale re-defined, we’d say it’s REWIRED. Cheers!”

Bottle from The CP&K. Brown pour with a beige head. Chocolate, caramel and light cinnamon aromas. Coffee, brown sugar and caramel flavours. Slight bitter edge. Bitter-sweet finish.

Brown ale isn’t really my style, but i still liked this beer. Nice taste and nice mouthfeel. Colour isn’t my favorite but still fine.

Erstaunlich hopfiger Antrunk, in dem das Malz vorerst nur eine Nebenrolle spielt, sich aber schnell in den Mittelteil stellt. Der Hopfen ist dabei weiter mit blumigen Noten präsent. Wenig nach Zitrus, ausgewogen hopfig-malzig. Zum Ende nimmt der Hopfen das Zepter wieder in die Hand, das Malz ist nun untertönig und bietet erdige Noten. Trockener Abgang. 11/11/11/12/11/11

Superb brown, exceeding expectations. Bottle from Premiere. De Konnick glass that poured dark brown with off-white retained one-eighth head, and tons of spider lace. Malty aroma. Way bove average mouthfeel that delivers great bitterness with solid roasted malt backbone. Residual lemony aftertaste. Appropriate carbonation. masterful.

Bottled from de Molen. Clear copper color, medium brown head. Aroma of soft citrussy hops, hint of caramel, slight grassy, bit toasted, hint of bread and biscuit. Quite bitter taste, good amount of sweetness. Very nicely balanced. Excellent stuff!

The aroma is of tropical fruit and the appearance is medium brown and cloudy. The flavor is dry and fruity, the maltiness is sort of sneaky and in the background and has elements of coffee to it. Another very good English style ale.

Dark leathery brown. Nuts, perfume, lemon, spice, leather, nutmeg pepper. Thin texture, good bitter finish. Plenty of hop goodness.

500 ml bottle from Lukas Liquors. Pours a cloudy, dark brown color with a small khaki head that settles into a thin film and a ring. Aroma of toasted nuts, spicy hops, roasted malts, rust, earth, and vegetal notes. Flavor of roasted malts, dust, nuts, wood, and some spicy, floral hops. Light-medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, earthy mouthfeel. Not really the kind of brown ale that jumps out at me but pretty interesting nonetheless.

Pours dark brown with a rich tan head and a roasty chocolate aroma. There is a hearty bitter chocolate flavor with a dry hoppy finish that clings to the palate. This beer is rich enough to have with your dinner and refreshing enough to quench your thirst. Cheers! back to New Zealand.

Serving: 500 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a slightly hazy deep brown color with a small, foamy, light tan head. The nose has slightly floral hops, dark nuts, and a little dusty yeast. There is lots of carbonation in this brew. The flavor has nutty notes with a large hop blast. There is a good bit of bitterness in this brew. Light to medium body with high carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. I tend to enjoy British browns and this one leans more towards the hoppy side. Still, it was worth drinking.
