”Poor old misunderstood brown ale... This is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, yet it is often frowned upon, but why? Is it because the word BROWN doesn’t cling right, perhaps it leads the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour BROWN is less snazzy than, say ’golden’?? Or is it because the duopoly of NZ brewing have driven the BROWN style into oblivion by claiming the style for their most unattractive products??? We’ll let you think about that while you sip this beer, either in the sun on the beach or in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and cheese pie, with your Sunday roast or just by itself because you are thirsty and deserve a treat! Chances are this is unlike any Brown Ale you have ever tasted, it is malty, hoppy and flavourful. Some might say it is Brown Ale re-defined, we’d say it’s REWIRED. Cheers!”

Dark brown in colour with cream coloured head. Mild chocolate flavour, smooth silky mouthfeel, well balanced and bitterness lingers for ages. Yummy.

Found this to be in porter territory. Had that defining roasty ness to it with a little splash of hops on top though it didn’t have a chalky, jagged finish a porter might often have. Well rounded and obviously Soren knows his stuff just not my bag of hops. Nate mate great!

Bottle (Batch#1). Pours very dark brown with a creamy light brown head. It’s roasty on the nose with underlying fruity hops. Chocolate malt comes through in the flavour and a fruity hop burst balances out the malt. A roasty finish but perhaps slightly chalky and a ’soapy’ character too. It’s quite subtle all round but this has real potential. Courtesy of the man himself - cheers mate!

Nice chocolate, roasty and also fruity hop aroma. Dark brown with a nice head which lasts. Chocolate roasted flavors with also a really nice hoppy taste. Mouthfeel is full-bodied, slightly on the thin side but this adds to the drinkability. I really enjoyed the mix of malty, chocolate flavours in this beer along with the delicious hops which make it very drinkable.

Aromas are a spicy, cinnamonish chocolate, with a mild hop. Flavours are tangy at first with fruit such as grapes. Some spiciness, with clove and cinnamon. Nice dark malt flavours, with a tiny amount of coffee. Roasty and nutty and hoppy.

500ml bottle - Looks like Coke in a glass but with good tan head, can’t be faulted. Nice green/wet hop aroma. Flavour has touches of coffee, chocolate but dominated by the same ’green’ hop flavour. Hints of tobacco. Zings off the tongue, palate a little watery and lemon citrus at times but more than happy to drink this all day long.

Pint at Hashigo Zake at the end of a long night. But still tickled the taste buds nicely. Looks great, and those coffee and nutty flavours come out nicely. The type of beer you want to pull out a rigger of at home and enjoy all day/night.

I really liked this, having suffered the usual brown ale prejudices before trying it. Didn’t have my trusty notebook, but recall there was lots of dark choc and coffee with a surprisingly clean finish (for the malt weight) Didn’t get a lot of hop aroma on the nose, more malt driven, but very nice. Reminded me of a junior version of the Rogue Hazelnut which is a beer i loved

Very dark brown with a muddy tinge. slight coffee aroma, with a hint of hop. Nutty, coffee mat flavour with a strong-ish hop finish that lingers. Reasonale on the palate.

On tap at Malthouse. Pours brown, tan head. Aroma has a prominent lemony hop character with nice toasty malt & some dark fruits.
A nice toasty malt flavour up front with a bracing bitterness following. A great americanish brown ale, with a NZ hop twist.
