”Poor old misunderstood brown ale... This is perhaps the most versatile style of beer in the world, yet it is often frowned upon, but why? Is it because the word BROWN doesn’t cling right, perhaps it leads the mind towards less appetizing things? Is it because the colour BROWN is less snazzy than, say ’golden’?? Or is it because the duopoly of NZ brewing have driven the BROWN style into oblivion by claiming the style for their most unattractive products??? We’ll let you think about that while you sip this beer, either in the sun on the beach or in front of the barbie, with your afternoon steak and cheese pie, with your Sunday roast or just by itself because you are thirsty and deserve a treat! Chances are this is unlike any Brown Ale you have ever tasted, it is malty, hoppy and flavourful. Some might say it is Brown Ale re-defined, we’d say it’s REWIRED. Cheers!”

Hmm. The slight hoppiness is interesting. Always thought browns needed something. Wish it were a tad bit more thick.

Brown with a white head. Slightly funky, malty, sweet, a bit of cherry tart. A good brew but not overly interesting.

Pours dark amber with an off-white, fluffy head that sticks around. Aroma is of honey, burnt sugar, and caramel. Some mild oxidation. No hops. Flavor is herbal, earthy, and nutty with some caramel. Slick mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Maybe it’s the age (best by in 2 days), but I don’t get the high score of this one.

Sample at the Badge-Whore Bowl (OSU vs AL) tasting on 01/01/2015. Dark brown color with a thin foamy beige head that evaporates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of malt, caramel and earthy hops. Light to medium body with flavors of toasted malt, sweet caramel and mild hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle to tulip Sourness, light malt, earthiness. Pours a dark brown with a long lasting creamy light tan head. Some fruitiness up front, then nuttiness, a touch of bitter chocolate.

Brown body, brown foamy and abundant head. Malty, brown sugar and lactose on the nose. Taste is sweet, dried fruit with a touch of piney hops, a touch of maple syrup. Tingly palate. Nice brown ale.

500ml bottle, very malty aroma with hints of caramel, coffee, chocolate etc, the taste is similar with a tangy bitter dry slightly hoppy finish, refreshing quality ale

500 mL bottle. A rather unimpressive brown ale. Needs more nuttiness, and there is a metallic note at the end.

"Murky brown with generous head. Body typical of the style, maybe a touch fizzy but smooth. Aroma and flavor win you over...ample roast, but intermingled with a plethora of tropical fruity hops. Well structured. More enjoyable than most American browns, but also priced like a six pack for 16.9 oz."

Alengrin (2742) - BELGIUM - AUG 31, 2014
New Zealand brown ale with very rocky, yellowish beige, frothy head and dark copper brownish red colour. Aroma of hazelnuts, caramel, coffee powder, milk chocolate, dried plums, orange, peppery hops, nutmeg, grapefruit, sage, pear, overripe berries. Refreshing onset, citrussy with restrained fruitiness, strong nutty and caramelly maltiness and a hint of roasted bitter in the end, dry with sharp carbo, spicy notes, peppery and leafy hoppiness in the tail, medium long. More roasted and more bitter than your average English brown ale.
