Saisons have been around for ages. Traditionally brewed by Belgian and French farmers to provide refreshment during harvest. I’m guessing that flavour wasn’t a main concern back then; the priority was to provide a beverage that was safe to drink, because water usually wasn’t. Never the less, over time they developed a beverage chrarissed by beer geeks of the modern world. The alcohol content was low, so the workers could consume enough to keep hydrated and still perform their job: To load the barn with enough barley for next years brewing season. I bet these hardworking, humble farmers never imagined, that centuries later, their style of brewing would inspire brewers from all over the world. As all our beers, this is a very modern, you might say new world, interpretation of this style. Based on the tradition we have used a French Saison yeast, which provides a plethora of funky, earthy, very "Belgian" flavours. From there we have upped the ante a fair bit by doubling the amount of malt, and thereby the alcohol, and loaded the kettle with punchy Nelson Sauvin hops. Unlike the original, this is not a beer meant to be drunk by the gallon. Moderation is the key for full enjoyment of all great beers.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2012 Great NZ saison, probably the best I’ve tasted. Love the balance and the fact the ETOH is not overpowering. Best as a summer beverage, sitting out in the sun.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2013 Bottle 500ml from King&Godfree and Cookie. Great yeasty and earthly beer. Aromas of dough, caramel, grain, vanilla, and perfume. Taste is sweet, with sour and bitter notes, and long length. Palate is creamy, carbonated, and full bodied. Amber, with a big frothy head.

Pours a cloudy yellow with nice white head and beautiful lasting lace. The smell to me is a lemony grapefruit blend at first then accompanied by saison style earthy yeast undertones. The flavour is a nice mouthful of zesty lemon and grapefruit finishing with a mix of yeast and pepper on the tongue. Great saison.

Light hazy, light brown beer with a firm white head. Looks promising! Lots of grapefruit, grapes, passion fruit, mango and raspberry bitterness. And this fruit cocktail is complemented with barnyard smells and wheat. The taste, then, does exactly what I hoped; lots of flavour, quite balanced but a clear hop character. Damn nice, although I agree it’s not necessarily a classic saison. But with this much flavour and unique twist, you won’t hear me complain. Well, except that it’s extremely sparsely imported and therefore very expensive. (50cl bottle, 9,60 EUR)

Wheaty taste but not overpowering like many other beers brewed in a wheat beer style which sometimes puts me off. Very fresh with a slightly malty tatse combined with a hint of a larger. Very easy and pleasent to drink. Another great craft from 8 Wired Brewing. Only downside is the price in Australia and NZ. Dont want to detract from the quality but its very expensive and limits myself to one or two bottles per month , probably due to the effort and time put in and the limited quantities produced each year.

Pours a hazy yellow color with a nice big white head that has great retention and nice lace. Aroma is a nice burst of citrus notes with a hint of lemon. Taste is yeasty citrus up front with a nice peppery bitterness on the finish. Blends very well together, wicked awesome saison!

Hazy amber beer with a big pale cream coloured head. Softish palate, a little dry. Mild fine carbonation. Creamy malt base. Lovely hops - vibrant grape with lesser blackcurrant, grapefruit and peach. Finishes with mild minerals and medium hop bitterness. Lovely! Nelson Sauvin never tastes the same twice and here it is particularly grapey.
