Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Muistiinpanot muutaman päivän takaa kertovat seuravaa: Paahtunut ja suklainen aromi. Paahtuneen makea ja hieman suklainen maku.

Shared with evil stepdad. Its relativly clear dark brown with a bubbling brown head. Aroma of light roasted malts, mild milky chocolate, mild smoke and some liquirice. Plesant smooth flavor of a mix between sweet malty caramel, bitter roasted malt and chocolate. The smoke is very subtle. Great wellbalanced beer.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2011 Classic porter look, not much to that. Aroma is rather smokey and a bit bacony. Some roasted malts as well, coffee, caramel. You sense that this is a tasty beer, somewhat large bodied. Taste is very smoky, some coffee bitterness, hoppy bitterness. Tastes like a lot more than 6,2%, though without being cloying and heavy. A really good smoky porter, though everything comes in short of the Limfjordsporter.

Almost black of color with a small brown head. An aroma of roast malt, lots of smoke and weak sweets. A smoked flavor of roasted malt, weak liqurice and coffee.

Bottle. Very dark brown, small and fully diminishing light brown head. Moderate, sweetish roasted malty aroma with licorice and light coffee, faint bacon. Body is medium to full, roasted malty and lightly sweetish flavor, licorice and light alcohol, faint smokiness. Finish is average, malty and lightly sweetish, licorice and faint smokiness. Although Bamberg smoked malt is used there is much more licorice than smokiness and bacon.

Bottle @ Oz’n’NZ tasting 2011. Bought @ Kihoskh.
Deep red-black with a small, creamy, beige head. Aroma has lots of smoke, light meaty, roasted malts and a bit of chocolate. Medium carbonation, dry and light bitter mouthfeel. Flavour has meaty smoke, just a tad too much sharpness, roasted, ashy, chocolate. Okay balanced, though.

Black colored brew. Smoke in the aroma, not too intense, just ok. Flavor has smoke, slightly burned malts, good amount of dark chocolate. Medium bitterness. Enjoyable.
