Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnít as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (itís true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the townís brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weíve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnít limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnít as crazy as it sounds.

Pours black with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of roasted smoaked malt. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter with a long smoked finish. Body is medium, texture is thin, carbonation is soft.

Bottle, courtesy of Meilby. Thanks for sharing man! :-) Pours a deep brown, near-black body with a small, off-white head. Aroma is smokey tones of meat and herbs, with hints of black berries. Taste is earthy, salty smokiness with some rather dry bitter hop tones in the finish. Nice malt base and full mouthfeel, well balanced. A very nice rauch from 8 Wired.

500 ml bottle shared by Matt at The Royale- thanks again, Matt! Pours dark cola brown with some red tints and a small tan head. Aroma of smoked malts, minerals, rusted metal, earthy hops, and peat. Flavor of smoked malts, minerals, earthy hops, toast, and dark chocolate. The smoke is pretty light compared to most smoked beers Iíve had. There is also a surprising amount of hoppiness to it. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a roasty mouthfeel.

Bottle, shared by meilby. A clear, ruby dark brown beer with a finger-thick off-white to beige head. Meaty, roasted aroma. Some coffee. Roasted flavor with a good dash of meaty smoke malt. Some dark berries too, and a touch of bitterness. Medium body, smooth. Tasteful, lasting bitterness. A nice one indeed, pleasant as a porter, pleasant as a smoked beer. 110301

From bottle at the Cask Pub & Kitchen on 12 February 2011. Quite dark brown. Erm - it has big smoke. Good smoke at that. Plenty of bacon notes - definitely not the ashy sort of feel that I get in some smoked beers and donít like too much. OK itís a bit one-dimensional but Iím a sucker for a decent smoked beer and that single dimension is often enough for me.

Bottle via trade. Pours a deep shade of brown with glistening smokey quartz-like redness. Above always smothered in a thin layer of frothy tan. Smells roasty with bitter chocolate undertones and laid upon outdoorsy campfire elegance. Body seems quite hoppy...bitterly so, abrasively so, distractingly so...almost unbearably so. The green, abrasive hop bitterness completely overshadows anything else that may be going here...with each sip, I start to see shadows of smoke and chocolate but this is completely annihilated with the wave of hop bitterness that quickly follows...harsh. Letís see how I progress through this bottle...

De botella, en casa. Black colour. Roasted malt and smoke in the aroma with some liqourice. Good mouthfeel. Smoky and roasted malty flavour, bit sweet, liqourice, pleasant medium bitterness. Pleasant smoke on the easy side.

Cola colored pour with a fizzy, frothy head that quickly dissipates. If not for the aroma, Iíd mistake it for a cola. Aroma is chocolate, not unlike most porters. That tart smokiness definetely comes through. Feels a little more watery then most porters, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Warming sensation sticks around. A very nice drop.
