Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

A Sim rate (bottle at Cask & Kitchen thanks to Ken): So Mes has semi-retired & I’m trying to pick up the slack. Aroma of roasty plastic. Almost good. Rubber & licquorice. Flavour is similar. Rubber again, liquorice & tart dark fruit. Roasty and malty. Pretty good flavour. But not incredible.

11-FEB-2011, bottle @home, with Ulkløbben, from "Fish & Beer". Served to please our "smoker", Morten. Black with lasting brown head. A really nice porter bordering on schwarzbier. Not so smokey, but very roasted, with some chocolate on the taste. Very smooth, very balanced. Even Sonni can drink this, saying that it is not one of the most smokey of it’s kind. Fine brew.

Dudar (103) - Minsk, BELARUS - FEB 8, 2011
Aroma of chocolate, coffee, licorice, faint smoke and some fruity notes. Taste chocolate, toast, sweet malt, prunes, coffee, licorice, smooth bitterness. Disregard the cocky label, smoked note is so faint you barely notice it. This beer has a lot of common porter traits, but what strikes you is an amazing balance!

Nice sweet malt aroma with a little smokiness. Roasted smokey flavor, slightly burnt malt finish. Thin mouthfeel. This is a decent beer, but not a great beer.

Bottle shared by emacgee. Pours dark brown with sudsy light tan lasting head. Nose is smoke, char, light roast. Flavor is more of the same. A pretty well done smoke beer. A tad astringent on the finish.

Pours dark coppery brown with two fingers of creamy mocha tan head. Nose shows a light roast and dark coffee with some bakers chocolate and a balancing smoke character. Lots of roast and dark grain in the flavor, bitter coffee with a light smoky character in the background. Medium bodied with a dry finish and bitter palate.
