Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnít as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (itís true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the townís brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weíve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnít limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnít as crazy as it sounds.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of beech wood smoke, roasted malt, caramel, and sweet malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of beech wood smoked malt, caramel, and hops, leading to a dry and bitter finish.

ashy, burnt wood nose with spiced herbal tea with orange oil and candle wax notes. lesser notes of rubber, matchsticks, flint and soy sauce / black patent malt. lively carbonation; medium body; mostly dry; fresh with mildly buzzing hop acidity and dry oak and mild notes of unsweetened bakers chocolate (chalkiness too). a little bit of spicy worcestershire sauce in the finish, and a little rough around the edges. lacks finesse and bounce, but itís still satisfying and enjoyable.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of minerals, smoke (charred wood), vanilla. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Well, the name "big" smoke might be misleading if youíre into Schlenkerla et al., but itís certainly not wimpy and ultimately balanced pretty well with the other aromatic notes. The smoke isnít meaty like Schlenkerla, more of a plain burnt-wood smokiness (not ashy, thankfully). Also very minerally, but not chalky, a big plus. Very nice flavor balance and overall a very nice beer...but at a ridiculous $10.50 for 500mL, I wonít be buying more of it. I can get the same amount of Schlenkera Urbock for $6, after all.

Bottle 500ml. Great beer. Aromas of smoke, grass, caramel, and grain. Taste starts sweet, with bitterness taking over for a long finish. Palate is velvety, and medium-to-full bodied. Black, with a thin head.

From a 500ml bottle on 30/3/2011. Pours a very dark reddy brown with a big head. Has a lovely aroma of smoked meats, coffee and raisins. Tastes of roasted and burnt malt, and milk chocolate, with smokey flavours very prominent. Finishes with a nice, sharp and quite long hop finish. This is an excellent, complex porter.

500 ml bottle. Deep red, almost black body with a fine, dense beige head. A pleasant smoky aroma with dark malt and chocolate. Flavor is smoked malt, chocolate, berries, hint of bacon/ham and bitter. Well balanced in smoke and bitterness, distinct but not overwhelming. Relativity light body and smooth mount feel, quite quaffable actually.
