Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnít as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (itís true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the townís brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weíve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnít limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnít as crazy as it sounds.

Bottle. Not as smoky as I was expecting, although this is a good thing as smoke can be a bit overpowering sometimes. Great porter base under all that. Works really well

Black pour with a thick tan head. Smoky, coffee, cocoa, roast aroma. Taste is Coffee, dark chocolate, roasty flavours. Heavily carbed, comes across slightly oily but the fizz robs it of a little of that.

Very dark pour with light tan head. Aroma of smoke, coffee, bitter chocolate. Flavor is very smoky, more of the aroma in the flavor, spice, alcohol. Extremely smooth and drinkable considering the powerful flavors at work here.

Huge tan-beige head, dense, over deep dark-brown beer with orange reflections; shards of lace. Smoke, phenolic, wood, woodstainer, charcoal, dark malts. Tar, smoke, bitterish hops, tannines, black chocolate, cypress flavours. Warming up, finish shows some liquorice-like sweetness. Medium bodied; quite slick, even a bit oily; feels well-carbonated. Phenolic, but quite nice smoked porter.

Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has smoke, coffee, some chocolate. Black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is roasted, has coffee, some chocolate. The smoke is more present in the nose than while tasting. Medium to full bodied. Nice one.

Canít say that I was too impressed, having it either as a smoked or as a porter. Served too cold, and I had the impression that there was more bitter charred than smoked in my opinion. Deserves another taster.

A lovely smoked porter that people donít drink. Soft and smooth with a palate that just lingers.

Aroma - nose is big and full of woody smoke ~ even a little of that smoked ham going on Appearance - beer explodes out the bottle setting up a 1" beige head. It fades into a halo Taste - much smokey wood notes, and some, and some spice as well, some chocolate hiding behind the smoke as well Palate - body is medium to full; texture is chewy and slick; carbonation is lively; finish is medium in length and full of harnessed roast
