COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Lovely smoky nose, like a Bamberger. Lovely bacon and smoked salmon-like notes. Pretty black, great tan lacy head. Roasted malts, plus smoke, a bit of dark choco, caramel, and coffee. A bit too light, but great flavors and aromas.

Mollasses aroma with of course some smokiness. Smells a bit like coke and looks like it too with a fizzy head and dark brown body. Very thin and fizzy body, too thin. A bit of grassy bite comes through at the finish. Overall for a smoked beer, pretty good. To make a better beer overall it needs more body though.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured black with a tight tan head and excellent lacing. Big smoky aroma with notes of treacle and dark malt. Heavy carbonation, but pretty full mouth feel. Initial flavours of peat, burnt sugar and dark fruit. Finish was smoked wood chips, coffee, roast and cured meats. A meeting a great styles - I would have been quite disappointed by anything less than a great beer.

Smells and tastes a bit like the Rasputin. Aroma is smoky. Taste is big, smoke, sweet, hops bitterness. A bit thin palate. Not bad but Rasputin is better.

Appearance: Dark ruby/brown with 3 finger tan head. Aroma: Smoky, reminds me of a tin of smoked oysters, chocolate malt and peat. Taste: Low/medium sweetness, medium bitter and sourness. Palate: Thick coarse texture, light/medium body, average carbonation, lingering dry bitter/sweet, smoky and malty finish. Comments: Very tasty and glass lace.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Nose brings out moderate smoke, a little chocolate, and leather. Flavour brings out very similar notes - smoke upfront, with almost as dominant notes of chocolate and leather. Finishes once again on smoky notes. Solid for the style - I’m just not a big fan of the style.
