Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Dark black poor. Minimal head. Aroma of slight roast malts mixed in with just a hint of smoke. Not at all as intense as I was expecting. Aroma careys through beautifully into the flavour. Smoke is still not as intense as I was expecting. At first it’s a little disappointing the lack of smoke but as I continued drinking I noticed how it’s all just really well made balanced with the smoke, the roast, the slight coffee and chocolate allcomplementing one another. Really well done.

500ml bottle from Brewdog online store. Black brown colour, beige foam head leaving lacing and aroma of smokey bacon, peated malty. Taste is smoked meaty roasted malts with some dark fruity, toffee, brown sugar, caramel notes, bittersweet. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, softish carbonation, smokey malty finish. Very drinkable.

Bottle; thanks to Alex of Ale House. Bamberg smokey malts; aged smoked cheese, good lacing. Taste is smoked German sausages (wurst); smoked cheese; caramel and some good amount of hops. Nice and clean. Really good usage of bamberg malt. Hopefully see more 8-Wired in the UK.

Pours opaque black-brown with tanned hide - colored president foamy head. Aroma is beautifully smoked and something sweet. Taste is deeper smoked like ribs that behind sweeter and light but becomes a fuller mouth feel with the persistent dark chocolate gently bitter sweet throughout. Almost rye bitter after-taste.

500ml bottle from New World Fendalton, Christchurch. Pours dark brown, a bit like Coke. Lively head, hints of smoke in the nose. And the smoke is also clearly defined in the taste, next to typical porter notes: Liquorice, caramel, a bit burnt. Well balanced though, a beer experiment well done indeed.

Pours dark as a starless night. Massive World Class head, lacing and retention. Nice rich nose of caramel sweetness, dark fruit (plum, fig) over a light note of smoke. As it warms, the smokiness increases but never really comes to the forefront. Heavy medium body with a fair amount of creamy texture. Above average carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a nice burst in the finish. The flavor profile is a bit below normal intensity, extremely well balanced and a bit complex. It begins with a slightly bitter dark chocolate note over a light caramel sweetness. This flows into a very mild bitterness with distinct notes of dark fruit. The finish is where a light hint of smoke emerges as the flavors fade. This one is good, but there is no big smoke aspect.

[6243-20140408] Bottle. Smoky charred campfire wood aroma. Black cola body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head that started out huge. Charcoaled toast and smoky wood flavour. Full body. Interesting. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5

Bottle 500ml. Pours extremely dark mahogany with low light-beige head. Some lacing. Aroma is of wieners sausages, chocolate, menthol. Taste is of roasted malt, acrid ashes, chocolate. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Soft carbonation. Overall: The more you drink it, the more you get used to the ashy smoke. Still somewhat unpleasant.
