Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isnít as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (itís true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the townís brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). Weíve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isnít limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isnít as crazy as it sounds.

Dark black poor. Minimal head. Aroma of slight roast malts mixed in with just a hint of smoke. Not at all as intense as I was expecting. Aroma careys through beautifully into the flavour. Smoke is still not as intense as I was expecting. At first itís a little disappointing the lack of smoke but as I continued drinking I noticed how itís all just really well made balanced with the smoke, the roast, the slight coffee and chocolate allcomplementing one another. Really well done.

Bottle at Craigís. Pours dark brown, quite sweet, not too smoky, too fizzy though.

"Nice treat from a real nice brewery. Pours stout like, black with ginormous khaki head. A little overcarbonated, but leaves a nice film after on the palate, and nothin some swirlin wont take care of. Sweet wood, smoke, licorice, roasted malts. Really beautifully done aroma and flavor. Light impression of smoked meat...like Alaskan but beef instead of fish. Will get again. 4.25."

Clear dark brown, minimal brown head. Roasted malts with smokiness and a note of smoked bacon, but not exaggerated at all. Licorice and coffee beans. Dry roasted malts with a smoky ashy ending and bitter aftertaste.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Dark brown/black colour, light brown foam. Medium carbonation. Very roasty aroma with notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Medium smoked. Easy drinkable. Good beer!

22 oz bottle shared. Pours dark with tan coffee cream head. Roasted malt aroma with a little chocolate. This beer has the smoke flavor, which I love, but itís not too overwhelming. Chocolate malt flavor with a smokey finish that sticks around. Good, unique beer. Really enjoyed this.

Bottle. Black and pored with a massive head that hung around for some time. Slightly bitter but nothing really going for it. Anticipated better than this.

500ml bottle from drinkstore. Pours dark black with tan foam head. Head reduces but stays. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, some smoke but itís slight. Creamy chocolate, burnt malts, oily mouthfeel. Dry wood earthy bitterness on finish. Full flavour and lasting to the end. Dry mouth end. Really good beer.

Chocolate, coffee and ash nicely packaged in smokey flavours alongside bitter hop notes. Not much here I donít like. Lovely, lovely beer from New Zealand (New Years eve 2013, Skagen, Denmark)
