Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

I’d go another of these, but that would be because I’m enjoying it as a beer and a drink, you don’t have to contemplate at every mouth what it is your enjoying. A beer for drinking and not for challenging you. It works.

Smell of smoke, chocolate. Black colour, dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, some licorice. Smokiness very neatly in background. Bitter. Soft carbon, creamy texture, full body.

Bottle: Muddy brown color with a monster of a fluffy brown head. Lots of carbonation and the pour is a waiting game. Nice smokey aroma, mostly campfire smoke. Little else comes through in the flavor, very light cocoa and oak to go with a heavy smoke presence. It’s not harsh, but damn full of smoke.

2014-04-08. Black body, large foamy beige head. 4+ Aroma of dusty mocha, light smoke that grows exponentially with a swirl of the glass. Flavour has a relatively sweet first sip and middle, dries out a bit in the finish with moderate smoke. Whispers of cocoa and moch underneath. Smooth effervescent average palate. Surprisingly enjoyable, I have been putting off drinking this because it is smokey, but the smoke is relatively restrained. Pretty decent. Bottle is 6+ months old from a private order

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein sehr dunkelbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch rauchig, röstmalzig, holzig, Kaffee. Geschmack röstmalzig, rauchig, holzig, Karamell, Schokolade, Kaffee.

Nice amount of smoke in the nose, together with burned and chocolate malts. Not thin either. Medium bitterness to balance all that malty punch and it does so perfectly. The result is a mix of a bready and even banana bread kind of base with a pleasant smooth smoke and leather, ending with a bitter chocolate touch. Yes, I really dig this one. (50cl bottle brought from De Molen by Bertanne)

Bottle at Nelson blue. Pours a pitch black color with a slightly tinted brown tan. Lighter tasting then a normal porter. I could session this all day ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Black pour with a light tan head. Smoked malt on the nose. Flavor is porter base with smokey notes. Not quite as smokey as I thought it would be. Smooth and easy to drink. Decent brew but not as smokey as I wanted.

Bottle. Not as smoky as I was expecting, although this is a good thing as smoke can be a bit overpowering sometimes. Great porter base under all that. Works really well

Black pour with a thick tan head. Smoky, coffee, cocoa, roast aroma. Taste is Coffee, dark chocolate, roasty flavours. Heavily carbed, comes across slightly oily but the fizz robs it of a little of that.
