4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20

Pours a a dark brown/black with a nice fluffy tan head. A phenomenal lace that?s there to stay. Smell is of roast malt and chocolate followed by the apparent delicious smoke aroma. Flavour has a light bitterness, nice amount of smoke flavour(Not too much) notes of chocolate malt.

Bottle 500ml. Great beer. Aromas of smoke, grass, caramel, and grain. Taste starts sweet, with bitterness taking over for a long finish. Palate is velvety, and medium-to-full bodied. Black, with a thin head.

Difficult to fault really. Its a very different beer, well worth a try. The highlight is the balance of flavours, the smokiness is just stunning yet not too overwhelming.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. An inky black beer with ruby red highlights that pours with a MASSIVE foamy head. It has chocolate and slight sour red fruity flavours with fairly light smoke on the finish. Excellent!

This beer stands up to anything I had in Bamberg - delicious smoky complex malty goodness. Before I knew it my glass was empty. I would be really happy if this was a year round brew. Or at least a regular winter seasonal. What a stunner.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 7, 2010 Bottle. A beautiful black in the glass. The nose is deliciously smokey - reminiscent of bacon or ham (and I’m vegetarian at the moment). The palate surprises me - the body being much lighter than I expect. Also surprising is the very mild smokiness in the flavour - the chocolate is also very evident. But I really love the oily residue left in my mouth. Being a Schlenkerla-fiend, I can’t say it reaches those heady heights. But I don’t think it is trying to, and in itself is a highly drinkable porter with a splash of something different. I’m going to need to stock up on this!
