COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Bottle. Looks like LA will win the cup. Thick heavy head on dark bown. Aroma is as close to Bamburg as I have smelled outside of Germany. Light on the Porter, big on the smoked malt flavour. Drinkable but BOLD.

First proper porter I’ve tried, and very nice too - from a seasoned IIPA drinker :-) Very dark beer, almost purple round the edge of the glass. Quite malty, but certainly not heavy, unlike say, Guinness. Can really taste the smoky, chocolate malt flavours, with minimal hops on the aftertaste. Highly enjoyable.

Nearly midnight pour with a massive latte head that took days to settle. Aroma of wood, char, smoke, and ash with mild cocoa notes cropping up. The flavor flips that on its head and has only mild notes of barbecue and more aggressive chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Fan of these guys and this one underwhelmed me a bit.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is meaty smoke with some roasted malt. Flavor is more of the same with some hearty smoke and some big roasted malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice.

Very Smokey. Almost to much. Shared between 3 of us. Could not have a whole bottle. Very much a food beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml bottle from Bieropholie.
Appearance : Dark black with big foamy brown head.
Aroma : Light rubbery phenols, light smoke, light roasted malt, light wood. Light fruits.
Taste : Light smoke with roasted malt. Piny and slightly resinous hops. Finish smokey and woody with light coffee and roasted malt. Persistent resinous hops with coffee.
Palate : Soft carbonation, light body. Dry finish.
Overall : Interesting beer. Smoked malt could be better defined and more present. There is a light phenolic rubbery note that bothers me. Good beer but I feel like it falls a bit short on a few angles. Smoke is not very well defined, the malts are not really rich. Palate is a bit thin. All in all, a tasty beer but not among the good examples of the style.

Nearly black. Thin head. Rich chewy aroma, taste is also rich, thick, chocolatey and with a toasty, woody finish.

Deep dark ruby with medium beige head. Lacing. Aroma.. mostly roasted malts and mild smoke, chocolate, bit weird hops not in bad meaning, licorice Bit sweetish with moderate bitter finish. Good stuff. I am not fan of smoked especially hardcore smoked, so this kinda mild smoked I really liked.

beautiful smokiness over perhaps a slightly disappointing porter - there are some nice coffees and such in there, but nothing particularly bold. with that being said, still a lovely beer.

Popping the cap off I got a whiff of smoke, honestly, it actually stung my eyes a bit. Pours opaque and dark but not jet black. Big latte head which keeps the aroma at bay. Swirl it and I get what I would consider very typical smells for dark beer like this: slight coffee, cocoa, toast a bit of sweet and now and then a hint of sour. Taste is of standing around a campfire or BBQ while drinking a porter. Nice enough, but not something I’d want to drink all the time as the smoke distracts from my two loves, malt and hops.
