Now what is this? A smoked beer?? It really isn’t as crazy as it sounds. 250 years ago virtually all beers were smoked (it’s true, Google it!), but with the dawning of the industrial revolution most of the smoke lifted. However, in the German town of Bamberg the flame has quite literally been kept alive and to this day the town’s brewers produce world renowned beers brewed with their own special rauchmalz (beechwood smoked malt). We’ve taken our best porter recipe and added a good measure of that same Bamberg Rauchmalz. The smoke mingles beautifully with the rich, dark roasted chocolate flavours of the porter without being overpowering. Although it pairs extremely well with smoked seafood, barbeques, strong cheeses and hearty stews, its food friendliness isn’t limited to savouries; chocolate and caramel based deserts are great companions too! Trust us; it really isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Bottle at home, from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. Pours thick deep black, two finger thick pale tan head, very persistent, creamy looking, nice lacing. Nose is light smoke, some peat, light creosote, some meaty/savoury notes, bitter chocolate. Flavours of smoky chocolate cake, light bacon, some fresh black biscuit, very dangerously drinkable. This is not a threat to Alaskan Smoked Porter, but I can’t buy Alaskan Smoked Porter locally, so it will be a regular threat to my liver. Tasty stuff!

Vu le nom, j’avais un peu peur de devoir appeler les pompiers ... En l’occurrence, au versement , que de mousse ... que de mousse ! Une vraie cheminée de mousse mais qui ’s’amenuit assez vite en se "creusant" de l’intérieur. Au goût c’est très fumeux en effet, mais dans le bon sens avec ce qu’il faut de crémeux pour adoucir le tout .... Vraiment très chouette, même si ce petit texte ne vous donne pas trop d’indication sur ma dégustation ...A reboire avec plaisir en tout cas.

500 ml. Pours deep mahogany with an ice cream float styled head. The aroma is still able to blast through with smoked bacon, brown sugar and some added smoked ham hock. Tastes of smoky ham hock with some earthy collards, molasses and a touch of vinegar. A bit of sterile gauze too, but it’s easily overlooked if you just want to be smoked. Medium body has a nice balance, but too much carbonation that flares up at times.

Au nez un léger goût fumé avec des touches de bois et des notes grillées. En bouche une petite acidité un léger goût fumée. Une finesse dans la réalisation !

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Opaque dark brown color. over-zealous 4 " dark tan head, streaks of lace. Aroma of smoked malt. Taste is toasted malt that turns quickly to carbonation, chocolate and then smoke. It hardly needs hops as the finish is already well-balanced. I’m not partial to smoked brews, but this one is solid.

Bottle. Very dark brown color, thin tan head. Aroma of bacon and smoldering coffee grounds. Taste has licorice and burnt espresso. Very nice.

At a tasting, thanks, stiff light brown creamy head, aroma is a melange of smoke, charred ans peaty notes, flavor of smoke, wood ans some caramel, light lingering bitterness. Nice and mellow, highly enjoyable.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Alexey’s place. Thanks Alexey. Deep brownish-amber with brownish head. The aroma has lots of sausage, smoked, notes of wood and salted snack. Salty flavor, bitterish, smoked, notes of sausage, salted snack and some wood, earthy, dry. Medium to full-bodied. Great.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Alexey’s place. Thanks Alexey, Black with a tan head. Nice smoky aroma with wood, meaty notes, caramel, roast, a bit of chocolate. Great sweet flavor, malty, smoky, with some roast, caramel, chocolate, and some bitterness. Rounded mouthfeel. Really good stuff.

A proper smoked porter that pours black with a thin beige head. Dark malts, smoke aroma. Taste is very smoky. Barbecue juice. With caramel, coffee, roasted malts. Easy to drink, smooth and tasty. Nice ale.
