COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The beer you hold in your hands is the result of years of practise and refinement. I have brewed it every year since I started homebrewing, and it was one of the first beers I ever brewed. In fact before the mere thought of 8 Wired was conceived. I always knew that one day I would brew this beer commercially. Every year the Sultan has been different, but it is always Belgian inspired, of course with a large dose of sultanas. This bottle contains the fifth version of the Sultan. I finally decided to base it on a Belgian style Quadrupel. The sultanas are more present than before, and it is brewed with a hefty dose of pilsner malt, Belgian specialty malts, dark candy sugar and a funky yeast strain. Experience and enjoy it now, or mature it for years to come. I canít personally guarantee it, but I bet that it will get better with time. Soren Eriksen Brewer

A New Zealand quad - looking forward to this one . Pours deep ruby redwith a full beige head . Aroma is jumping out of the glass - rich dark dried fruits , caramels , malts , plums . Sweet taste again of dark fruits and caramelised sugar. Vinous oily body . Alcohol burn comes through. A good attempt at a quad but lacking complexity and balance compared to the best Belgian examples

Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours mahogany with a disappearing beige head and an enticing plum and candi sugar aroma. There is a fruity dark malt and raisin flavor with a grape finish. Not a standard quad, but pretty tasty.

Bottle. Dark red pour with small beige head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and dried fruit and a hint of licorice. Taste is sweet and alcoholic with raisins, plum, slight overripe fruit, yeast, nut and rye-tasting caramel. Nice oily texture, ends malty/fruity and slightly warming for quite some time.

Pours a reddish brown color with a light brown head. I found out they use wine grapes in their flavoring. And I can taste it. Okay quad.

Poured a slightly red color with a medium sized off-white head. Smells boozy with plumb and wine. Taste also has alcohol. Pretty sweet at first but iy becomes dry towards the finish. Fruity with grapes and dates. Overall not that great.

Bottle @ home. Iíve had WAY too many mediocre Quads lately. Hope this sucker is a winner. Pours a hazy, reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Huge candy sugar/caramel aroma, moderate dark fruity, ultra sweet, a touch spicy aroma. Fairly high carbonation. Incredibly sweet to the point of cloying taste. Super rich candy sugar, toffee, plum, caramel, black cherry, dark grape/raisin flavor. Another disappointing (and cloying) Quad.

#1202 bottle; nose is plum, decent red apple, quite sharp sour alcohol note, then toffee, feel is mediumfat, carb is medium, taste is weak raisin note, leather, rosehip, then earth, sour leaves, sweet malt aftertaste with a comfortable alcohol burn

Bottle picked up at StateLine. Poured into a snifter, decent little head that didnt stick around. Light brown in color... Aroma of sweet malts and some dark fruits. Taste is sweet..... more sweet than I like but not offensive. Dark fruits, candy, grapes, sugary, sweet malts, belgian yeast. Medium body, carbonation level is slightly low. To piggy back off the brewer I bet this beer will get better with age. Overall: This is a good beer, which I enjoyed sipping on..... but its hard to have a quad and not compare it to St Bernardus abt 12 or Rochefort.... so compared to them its a little let down but I would like to revisit this in a couple years or so.

Bottle @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours a deep hazy bronze-hued brown body with a small white head. Nose is nuts, sour-ish dried fruit tones, candy sugars and hints of red berries. Taste is tart, fusel-like tones up front, then cellar must, burnt sugar and hints of nuts and candy sugar. Medium body and carbonation. Interesting take on the quadrupel style, with a sour-ish touch (probably from the "funky" yeast and possibly the sulatana grapes) and quite all right but not really impressive.

500ml bottle. Pours a dark hazy amber brown with some ruby hints around the edges. Aroma is sweet with lots of candi sugar and Belgian yeast. There is a sweet fruity character outside of that though, presumably from the sultanas. Taste is slightly more tart than I was expecting up front with the raisiny sweetness present but nor as dominant as in the nose. The backbone is Belgian yeast and candi sugar. Lightly bitter and tart finish. Mouthfeel is lively and medium bodied for the style. This is a decent beer and fairly average as quads go, though itís tough to compare to some of the big boys (hello, St. Bernardus). Nonetheless, I do enjoy seeing great craft beer from new places like NZ.
