COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Very similar to pre-prohibition American beer, 961 Lager has a 5.2% ABV and is characterized by its dark golden colour. The use of “Bottom Fermenting Yeast” at lower temperatures makes for pronounced bitterness and a floral aroma that comes from the use of North American Cascade Hops. 961 Traditional Lager takes longer to mature resulting in crispier flavours.

Pours a hazy orangey-yellow with a fairly large white head. Aroma is almost exclusivly citrus, with some stale dusty cardboard notes coming through. Tastes like chewing on a cascade pellet, with citrus maybe a hint of apricot, and an earthy bitter fiish. Different lager. Much more flavor that a regular lager. But that being said, kinda clunky. No balance and there isn’t really any complexity.

Not usually a fan of Lagers but I thought I’d give this one a try. I’m really glad I did. 961 never cease to impress me. Aroma: it has a mild sweet floral aroma. Appearance: not a fan of light colored beers but this one was great, a nice light gold. Taste: it has a nice sweetness to it that complements the aroma. A great pair to fruity desserts!

330ml bottle pours a deep golden color with a massive white head with excellent retention settling to some soapy lacing on the glass. Aroma is citrus with some floral notes and light fruits and pale malts. Taste is citrusy hop bitterness balanced with some light fruits and malty grain sweetness. Light to medium body with plenty of carbonation. This is truly what a lager should taste like and is well above the standard for lager brews.

Single bottle purchased from Enoteca Wine & Spirits in Calgary, AB on 05/07/2011. Colour: A dark orange, and like the 961 Red Ale, absolutely ludicrous amounts of head that are in no hurry to disolve. A 2oz glass took me over 5 minutes to pour! Nose: Incredibily fruity. Abundance of apricots and peaches, vanilla and toffee also lend a hand. Taste: Medium sweet, light bitter, light sour. Sweet dominant, more so than the Red Ale. Barley plays a big role mid to late. The finish is barley dominant with slight bitter overtones. Almost a touch sweet this time, and the fountain’s of head are annoying, but still overall impressed with this 961 place.
