2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Glouglouburp (4772) - Montreal, - NOV 16, 2010
In short: A fruity IIPA with a annoying strong soap/bubblegum character. Meh.
How: Tap at Chambly beer Fest 2010.
The look: Partly cloudy golden orange body topped by a medium off-white head with medium retention
In long: The strong hoppy nose is a bit off-putting with its strong soapy signature. What the hell is that? Taste has lots of fruity hops (tropical fruits) but also a lot of bubblegum, soap and perfume. A resinous bitterness washes the off-flavors away and the beer hides its alcohol and sweetness very well. I didn’t care for this beer. Not my thing. Way too soapy for me. And I don’t like soap. I never use soap. When I take a shower I don’t use soap, I rub Preperation H all over my body. That’s because I’m a total asshole.

Drank at the Fête Bière & Saveurs 2010 (tap), in Chambly Quebec, September 5. Golden orange, medium head. Dry hopped aroma of herbs. Taste of hops a bit sweet, but very dry, rather bitter but little sensation of alcohol. It’s ... happy birthday!

My Bottom Line:
A sweetened grape juice aroma clashes with the lemony and pineapple hop flavor panorama, leading this Double IPA into a powerful resinous aftertaste which is thankfully preceded by a pillowy cereal mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam stands atop the cloudy orange.
-That Quebec barley signature (bubblegummy grape juice) mars the hops in the aroma. What a shame. This is aromatic, but it is not a Double IPA nose at all.
-The mouthfeel is well rounded, softly effervescent and never heavy. Perhaps my favorite feature in this beer.
-The hop aftertaste is really complex, evolving into spicy proclivities after dousing the tongue in agile resins.
-I don’t understand some brewers’ insistance on using Québécois barley malt in EVERY beer they make. Do chefs use a vegetable (let’s say... broccoli?) in every single dish they create just because this vegetable is local? Doesn’t make any sense to me.
On tap at the Chambly festival.
