Overpriced, as with most of this brewery. Has a dry stout feel with a nice bite of roast malt. Some chocolate and espresso. Light bitter finish, carbonation is on the low side. Not quite an imperial as the name suggests. Ok but not worth the price. Tap at Festibiere Gatineau.

Can - 500ml. Opaque black body with a thin brown foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with roasted coffee hints. Taste carries strong roasted coffee notes. Grainy, woody, and smokey notes are also noticeable. Ends with a long, robust bitter/roasty finish. Good stuff.

(Rating #4948)

Bottle shared with Northropfrye. Not my favourite imperial stout. Not as much flavour as I would like it to have.

Not a bad imperial stout. Dark. A bit sweet and Belgiany actually for the style. Unique.

Bottled February 2013. Pours a dark brown with very little highlights. Huge brown mocha head, frothy, creamy, with great retention and foamy lace. Aromas of coffee at first, showing lots of roasted malts with hints of chocolate and molasses. Medium-light bodied and slick mouthfeel. The taste is like bitter coffee. The roasted malts are smooth until the finish, where big bitterness shows up (lots of hop) and lingers. Quite different for an Impy Stout with lots of hop. Interesting.

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a medium dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of dry coffee notes with some roasted malt with some faint black chocolate notes. Taste is also dominated by dry coffee notes with light floral touch with some dry roasted malt with notes of black chocolate that are quite subtle. Body is about average with good carbonation. Quite a lot of character even though the ABV is quite low for the style.

341 ml bottle from Broue Ha HA, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep brown-black with a full mocha head. Aroma: lots of deep-roasted malts, a touch of broth/soy sauce, black coffee, black strap molasses and a touch of licorice, a little grape-like fruitiness, cocoa powder, very dark chocolate, quite big for the ABV. Palate: Medium+ body, full, smooth, slightly prickly effervescence. Flav.: Inky and dark, molasses, soy sauce, dark chocolate, very deep and dark, a touch of grape-like fruit, a little leafy hops, surprisingly big for the alcohol content; dry with pretty big bitterness and a long, inky, mouth-coating finish of dark-roasted malts.

I’m impressed by the depth of this beer, given the fairly modest alcohol content.

(Lot-1 Janv. ’13) (540-210213)
