6,99$ for a 341ml bottle at Peluso, bottled in march 08. Very funny label with a "dead corpse" or a corps mort lying on a floor, as if the guy was in an ethylic coma. Mostly sweet, smokey and spicy aroma with a pretty complex taste. It tastes like a barley wine, a good one, for about a second or two and then, rather unexpectedly, Kaplunk!, the smokeyness hits your tastebuds, very hardly for this kind of beer. Finale is dry and bitter, although the smoke stands. Texture might be slightly thin but the overall balance is quite impressive. The smokey side makes it pretty unique but I’m not sure I like it that much...

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2009 341ml bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a medium creamy caramel head. Some lacing. Nose of hop, strongly sweet peach or apricot. Hints of raisins also. Quite complex aroma. Light smokey hint. Taste is quite smokey and malty, quite herbal also (wet herbs). Light alcohol feeling. Very sweet and fruity. Unique smokey taste kicks in half way thru the profile and stays on the finish. Nice sipping, very well done but not exactly my thing. Very interesting brew though. You need to give it a try ! Re-rate 091119. Had another bottle, not so drinkable. Too weird. Down from 3.8 to 3.6

My Bottom Line:
This distinguished Smoked Barley Wine displays salty and wooden smoke around candied fruit and fleet-footed caramel, creating a wonderful sipping experience.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thin veil of foam recedes to a ring over the gorgeous translucent red.
-The smoked herring mentioned on the label is not a joke! You can really smell that the smokehouse which was used to smoke the malts is not your typical smokehouse.
-This was obviously perfect with langoustines.
-Alcohol warmth is present, but doesn’t take much space in the flavor profile.
-The silky mouthfeel is perfect for elegant tastings.
-Smoke presence is well-levelled throughout.
-Herbal connotations appear in the finish, alongside the smoke.
-The non-smoked malts could be a tad better developed, but otherwise this is a beautiful creation which I hope to enjoy more often.
Bottled in March ’08.

A smokey beer! This beer has a very intereresting smoked flavour because the "malt" was smoke before the process! The label is also very interesting!

A reddish brown ale with a thin off white head. A nice candy malty aroma, with treacle, light c-hops, vinous notes. In mouth, a very peated barley wine, a bit nutty, veering on a smoked malty vienna. Nice offering. Bottle at Mondiale 2009.
