COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

12oz, bottled in July of 2011. Clear golden liquid topped by a feable white head. Big smoky nose with some malty notes underneath. Slight oxidized notes detected, taste is drier than expected too. Mouthfeel is liquorous but it has less body than I remember, signs of ageing? Flavors remind of bacon, smoky and salty. Overall a good beer, something that can age well but that is ultimately forgotten.

Bottle. Pours lightly hazy orange with a medium, frothy off-white head, long retention with light lacing. Aroma is pear and apple esters, cookie and light caramel malt, vanilla and oak with spicy alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt dominant, light spicy hops, dark fruity esters, and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

341mL bottle, pours an opaque dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma is of dried dark fruits (dates, figs, apricots), toffee, and grapes. Flavour of grapes, other dark dried fruits, some toffee, a bit of oxidation, and some rubber. Not sure if this tastes old or if it’s just crafted this way. Medium complexity that drinks easily enough for a barley wine and doesn’t cloy. Standard, nothing special.

341 ml bottle. Pours a clear orange amber with a resilient white head. Smell is cmoke and salty meat. Taste is sweet, barley candy, cake, salt and meat. Lots of smoke in the finish, along with a light bit of herbal, earthy bitterness. Warmth, some bitterness, and almost overwhelming smoke linger on. No alcohol taste. Light bodied, very strong, tasty ale. A very unique experience!

Aroma is smoky, sweet but not overpowering. Taste is similar with a little bit of saltyness as well. A little too sweet for my taste but the smoke and salt play really well with some bitterness and a touch of booze on the finish. Really nice beer and very unique.

I split a bottle of this with drabmuh recently. Review from notes. An American barleywine from Quebec that may contain traces of herring. Intriguing... This beer appears a clear orange color with a good-sized that leaves plenty of lacing in its wake. The aroma is very smoky. I guess I wasn’t expecting that. There is also a salty scent, reminiscent of an ocean. It’s almost as if this is a rauch barleywine. The beer is tasty indeed, but very sweet, and after a few ounces, I find it to be somewhat of a chore to finish. There is a certain level of complexity, however, that makes this beer alluring. An interesting brew for sure, and worth a try.

[bottle at Danish Invasion tasting with cgarviuk and fonefan--thanks, fellas!] Sweet vanilla aroma with a little grain, tropical fruit, and apricots. Hazy dark gold with no head. Sweet and bitter flavour that is in good balance. Lemony with some vanilla and smooth. Medium body, moderate carbonation.

Clear copper in colour with a long lasting off-white head, good lacing. Aroma is of alcohol, caramel, citrus, candy, bread. Flavour is a bit warm, sweet, lots of caramel, citrus. Warm mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, hot, quite sweet.

Not bad, a thin barley wine. Lots of alcohol.

341ml bottle purchased at La Trappe a Fromage in Gatineau, Quebec.
Opened on July 2, 2010.

Bottled in October, 2009.
