3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 DerWeg (1392) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 4, 2010
Gorgeous red gold color, clear, white cap. Insane aromas are scotch-like and peaty-malty and herbal backed by fruit. Taste is salty with leather and peat, dry herbs, fruit, smoke over the finish. A little astringent and dry but OK feel. Stunningly individualistic.

341ml bottle. Seaport Beer Festival. A lot of stewed fruit, sugar and tons of smoke, and I mean TONS. It all follows through on the palate, with the sweetness dying off quickly. A little sticky but overall pretty great.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beerbuzzmontreal (3490) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 6, 2010
Pours a cloudy amber color with a thin beige head. Intriguing, interesting aroma of salty, smoked herring and caramel. Flavor of salty, smoked herring and caramel. The body is light to medium with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. It’s not the best of barley wines, but it has to be the most original!
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 MXD (302) - Gatineau/St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, CANADA - JUL 4, 2010
Toffee and smoke nose -- not much of hops at this point. You can definitely taste the herring in this one.
I had much more elaborate notes on this one. I lost them, but I’ll certainly buy another one soon enough. I’m also bottle-aging one of them right now, and I MIGHT edit all this in a few years. The label says that one has a pretty good aging potential.
