TheBeerLover (1013), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 25, 2006 Aass Jule-ol pours to a beautiful, bright, tawny brown color with a slight tan head that fades, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is very inviting on this beer. Very pleasing roasty notes marry with some sweet malty and toasty aromas. There is also a very nice back drop of grassy hop aroma to balance. The palate is firm with lots of good nutty and toasty malt flavor. The body is very smooth and round on this beer, making it so drinkable. Aass Jule-ol finishes with more nutty flavors up front, then ends with a nice roasty finish.
This beer is a legendary Christmas brew. What really impressed me was the great roasty/nutty malt character of this beer paired with an exceptionally clean body. This is a wonderful, hearty, dark lager, perfect for Christmas time, and the winter season. It retails in six packs for about $11, so it is a little pricey, but I say well worth it. This beer is quite rare, and it isn’t often that you get to drink this speciality from Aass, so I say seek it out. Aass Juel-ol would match with a number of hearty dishes. I would match it with roasted goose, turkey, venison stew, or the classic Norweigan dish of lutefisk.
Mangili (10), Providence, Rhode Island, USA Dec 23, 2002 As Christmas beer goes, this is one of the best in the world. Only bested by the belgiums.
( side note: I prefer the old label) pobenohne (504), Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 10, 2005 Bottle. Thanks again to Steve for digging this up in Chestnut Hill. Another beat up case and beat up bottle, but the beer survived unscathed. A Vienna? To me, much more of a belgian strong ale, reminisenct of Oerbier: malty, boozy, just a hint of spice. 6.2%? burns more like 8+% Sigmund (1928), Hafrsfjord, Norway Mar 5, 2002 Updated: Nov 12, 2005The best Norwegian Christmas beer (Borg’s strong version being its closest rival.) Well balanced, rich flavour full of spices and caramel. hotstuff (3038), Indiana, USA Jan 3, 2004 A very easy and drinkable beer. This beer formed an average sized ivory head that was creamy with fine-medium sized bubbles that quickly dissipated. The body was opaque and uncarbonated with a reddish-brown hue. The nose was caramel and spices with a sweet, spicy, caramel, notes of alcohol and a roasty flavor. The texture was creamy, smooth, and a bit watery and thin in my opinion. This was a light bodied beer with sparse lacing on the sides of my glass.
