One blizzardy St. Pats in Boston, my friends and I got downtown too late to get into our favorite Guinnessing pubs and retreated to Julie’s place. She had bought this beer for the name and we dutifully, if a little sadly, quafed it, noting the spiciness. Not enough to replce a St. pats Stout, but rich enough to be there to soothe the disappointment.

The smell certainly doesn’t give away the taste. I thought the beer would be more bitter, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Brewed in two versions for the norwegian market. One at 4,5% and one at 6,5%. Both comes in slightly different verions each year. Aass Juleøl is one of the better norwegian ’Juleøl’. But only the stronges version is drinkable. The 4,5% version is the 6,5 plus water. A ’juleøl’ should be on the sweet side, with some spice character. One excellent german alternative: Rostock Hansebrau.

Labelled as Christmas beer because Vienna-lagers are the traditional Christmas style in Scandinavia. This is one of the better examples, with a reasonably complex character.
