I tried a the stronger version of this beer a little past its prime, but it was still a nice beer. Not really a bock or an Festbier but in that general catagory. Medium copper with a touch of simple sweet caramel and low hop character.

Assertive without being too bitter or strong, notwhithstanding a solid alcohol presence.

One blizzardy St. Pats in Boston, my friends and I got downtown too late to get into our favorite Guinnessing pubs and retreated to Julies place. She had bought this beer for the name and we dutifully, if a little sadly, quafed it, noting the spiciness. Not enough to replce a St. pats Stout, but rich enough to be there to soothe the disappointment.

The smell certainly doesnt give away the taste. I thought the beer would be more bitter, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Brewed in two versions for the norwegian market. One at 4,5% and one at 6,5%. Both comes in slightly different verions each year. Aass Juleĝl is one of the better norwegian Juleĝl. But only the stronges version is drinkable. The 4,5% version is the 6,5 plus water. A juleĝl should be on the sweet side, with some spice character. One excellent german alternative: Rostock Hansebrau.

Labelled as Christmas beer because Vienna-lagers are the traditional Christmas style in Scandinavia. This is one of the better examples, with a reasonably complex character.

Labelled as a Christmas beer - unsure why. The description above
is pretty much my review. A really good beer.
