2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 abstractbeer (170) - NORWAY - NOV 9, 2010
"2010 edition". Dark brown, coca cola-ish colour. Smells like bread and of course sweet malts. Some dark fruits too, a tiny hint of strawberries. Nice, thick mouthfeel. Sweet taste, with some bitterness and a hint of sourness in the aftertaste. Pleasant aroma, coffee notes, roasted malts, hints of raisins and some fruityness. A little coffee-ish aftertaste, with a very pleasant fruityness. Surprisingly good christmas beer! After the ones I’ve tasted I’ve been tempted to give up norwegian macro xmas beers, but this one gives me back my hope!
3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ClubGonzo (1732) - Bergen, NORWAY - NOV 7, 2010
Bottle. Dark bronze body with a fairly big, off-white creamy head, looking good. Nose is very vague, with only faint hints of caramel. Taste does improve, however; this is a Christmas beer with a bit of soul, at least compared to its many classmates from this particular segment of the Norwegian seasonal market. Dark malts, caramel - yes. But also a kind of nut-like character; hints of hazel and cashew, with fruity hints of raisins and red grapes that I haven’t found in a Christmas beer of this weight class before. Definitely one to buy if you’re not bound by local patriotism (as is the case with a lot of beer consumers in Norway) but rather attracted to good taste. God Jul from me to Aass for making this one.
