kepano (239), Meudon, France Jul 5, 2006 The concept of a double witbier piqued my curiosity, and from a brewer I have learned to adore, I really had no choice. The body is darker than any wit I’ve seen, a luminescent ripe apricot orange, shrouded by the usual des Rocs chunks. A pillowy meringue head sits atop initially revealing a surprising smoky aroma, that leads to a dusty, chalky scent of sweet cereal grains. Orange peel, coriander and nutmeg emerge as the classic witbier blend but these scents become delightfully dense and rich. Hints of chocolate and paper add to the complex aspect of this beer, rare in this style but oh so enjoyable. The first sip is smooth, drinkable, not as hefty as the nose might assume. Strong coriander and pepper flavors match the light, airy texture that retains a refreshing quality despite its thicker malt and ester profile, highlighted by banana and a sweet honey finish. An excellent witbier, that profits considerably from its rather corpulent palate, that allows a very appropriate gain in complexity.
wimpie133 (130), Brugge, Belgium Oct 18, 2009 Bottle, 33 cl at Cambrinus, Brugge. A yellow, hazy beer with a beautiful lacing creamy white medium head. A typical white beer smell of grains, hops ans coriander. Citrus was not noticeable by this one. The taste is grainy, wheaty, spicy and light fruity very simlar to the Witbier Haacht, but then in the good way: not a bad aftertaste but a light bitter, nice aftertaste. A very well balanced witbier, certainly belonging to one of the best. But hey: it is an Abbaye Des Rocs-beer, so you couldn’t expect less than that :-) Parket (219), Bruges, Belgium Oct 1, 2009 bottle@Cambrinus, Brugge. Orange/yellow colour, white head. Smell: coriander. Taste: yeasty, sweet, oranges, grainy, some bitterness. Very good witbier with a balanced taste! The Etruscan (304), Tuscany, Italy Sep 25, 2009 White thin full lasting head. Light amber colour. Aroma is malty, fruity (citrus, apples), yeasty, slightly wooden and spicy. Flavor is moderately malty with hoppy and fruity (unripe apricot and grape) with a light vinous accent, ending in a spicy finish. Medium bodied. Slayer85 (582), Firenze, Italy Sep 17, 2009 750 ml bottle. A hazy deep golden beer with a large, frothy, mostly lasting white head. The aroma is nice, stronger and maltier than a normal witbier, with notes of wheat, coriander, lemon, orange peel and a hint of hops. The flavour is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium body, lively carbonation, long finish with medium bitterness. Balanced and not overly spice, one of the best blanches of Belgium. renffisch (496), london, Greater London, England Sep 5, 2009 bottle @ biergasthof schiffner. Sweet apple and citrus nose. crystal clear in appearance, if you leave the sediment. light frothy head. bready in flavour but quite zesty and fruity. Smooth palate. good wit. Bloekie (149), Belgium Aug 14, 2009 Yellowish beer with almost no head. Which makes it not very appealing. Aroma is almost undetectable, and for what I can smell not that special. Flavor is that of a very watery beer. Palate is a dry bitterness followed by a sweet aftertaste. MPA (482), Nørrebro(formerly Aalborg), Denmark Aug 7, 2009 Bottle (cellphone rating). Hazy golden with a light white head. Aroma of wheat, yeast, banana and straw. Flavour is sweet again with the oddly placed hints of banana along with grain and some spicyness. Good dry bitter finish. michael-pollack (2603), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 2, 2009 750ml Bottle: Aroma of spices, pepper, slight coriander, wheat, light grains, and a hint of clove. Poured amber/brown/flaxen/light mud in color with a large, loose, white head that diminished and barely lasted around the edges. Cloudy. Very slightly sparkling. Full of tiny, medium, and huge-sized particles throughout. Kinda looks like diarrhea (cha cha cha). Flavor is light to medium bitter. Tastes of spices, yeast, light pepper, light wheat, and, unfortunately, water. Watery, dry texture. Average carbonation. Slightly sweet, spiced, finish is boring and dry. Bland and boring.
