COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Wow, At only $5.50 a bottle I was not expecting such a fine ale. Absolutely phenominal with chewy malty goodness.

There is an incredible amount of aroma and flavor in this beer. The more I sip it the better it gets. Keeps its head well and has a unique sweet/sour thing going on in addition to the array of other flavors.

A well hopped and malted beer, bursting with character. A nice smooth, foamy mouthfeel adds to the profile. Very nice.

Floral hops aroma wafts off the thin spritzy head - very pleasurable. Sweetness abounds, from malt and I would assume candi. Slight maple, brown sugar along with a touch of lactic. Alcohol come out in the finish. Right at the edge of being to sweet.

To date, only 4 rated this beer under 4, and two of those believed there was heat damage to the bottle, while 4 rated this their perfect beer...The cork splintered a bit, but I kept it out of the bottle, I found this a bit lighter, not as lush, perhaps more acidic, than the Grand Cru, again, a beautiful orange-reddish color that pours with a more frothy head, I’d compare the taste more to the Three Floyds Alpha King Pale Ale, as there’s this citrus dominated finish, but this may be smoother and a bit more malty, tho I might actually prefer the Grand Cru.

Damn! I am almost positive I got a bad bottle. Nothing I am reading came even close to what I tasted. Vinegar is all I could recognize. It was so sour I thought it was Rodenbach. I must try this again and re-rate it.

Nice sweet malty aroma. Quickly dissapating off white head. Delicious sweet flavor that I can’t pinpoint to a simply description. Alcohol makes it presence known, but it blends so well with the flavor of the beer that it wouldn’t be the same without it. Medium body with a nice bubble feel to the palate. Highly, highly recommended.

ecrvich said it well; the flavors are intense. Quite sweet, and yes, more so with warming. The aroma is malt all over, bready, and now I smell raisin in everything! Minimal clove presence, which to my mind is good because it is usually overdone. Palate is silky smooth. Very nice. And in my first Belgian glassware (La Chouffe) as well. Good thing I got 3 of these, so I can refine my sensibilities.

I was quite disappointed with my first tasting of this brew. I had expected much more. However, the flavors of oxidation and heat damage I sensed are all I need to know to presume that it was not stored by distributor as needed.
