COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

330ml bottle served in a Chimay chalice. A: Pours a nice dark amber to brown color. Quite dirty with chunks and yeasts floating around. That’s most probably the dirtiest beer I’ve ever had! Forms a medium head when poured. Good retention and many lacings formed and left S: Brown bread and Belgium yeasts. Toffee and caramel. Fruity and spicy too. Notes of black pepper and vanilla T: Complex. Balanced sweet-bitterness. Mix of Belgium yeasts, roasted malts, brown bread, dark fuits, brown sugar. An authentic Belgian Ale M: Quite smooth. Unbelievable that this is a 9% ABV. Medium-high carbonation. Very bready aftertaste O: Very drinkable. Very easidrinking despite of the high ABV. Absolutely great beer. No mistake here [ BA Review @ 1/28/2010 ]

"a sweet, woody, slightly spicy ull bodied belgian ale. better flavored and cleaner than either the tripel or grand cru. maybe still a touch overrated, but quite good. fig, malt, dark fruit, spice, candi sugar? lots going on here, quite smooth...still not quite a favorite."

750 ml bottle. Amber red colors big rocky beige head. Sweet caramel malt nose has notes of port and dark dried fruits. First sip yields a soft rich brown sugar maltiness that leans toward plums. Mid taste is sticky and sweet and complex with hints of vanilla and wood. Finishes with a spicy herbal hoppiness. This is a nice rich Belgian brown ale that is full of depth and complex character.

Bottle at home. Over 2 years old. Has a very deep reddish brown colour with a frothy, big, beige head. Aroma has lots of dried fruit, leather, oak, meat, heahter and some chocolate and alcohol. The flavour is similar a very rich with some licorice and more roasted malt, oak and chocolate. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A rich, complex and wonderful dark Belgian strong ale.

DuffMan (6968) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - SEP 16, 2014
Bottle, via trade with dresden (thanks Steve!). Deep golden brown with a lively beige head that retains beautifully. Sweet aroma of burnt sugars, plums, raisins, caramelized banana, vague spices. The palate reflects the nose perfectly, with a rummy quality and silky mouthfeel. Full bodied without being syrupy or cloying. Warming finish. Sublime.

McWorta (640) - LUXEMBOURG - SEP 16, 2014
Deep red/amber in colour with a fine lightly tan foamy head. On the nose complexity of sweet malt, barnyard, resin and spices develop. The texture is somewhat slick offering a full body. Rather sweet with some snappyness to it. Well balanced with a lingering sweet-spiced finish.
