Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Mahogany brown colour with delicate head on top. Aroma has red berries, syrup and yeast. Taste starts with berries, tannin, slight syrup. Then there comes vanilla and cream. Pretty soft flavours. Medium body with medium carbonation.

Wonderfully dark and full. Roasted and nutty and warm, although the alcohol is well managed. A great, unadulterated malty brown ale brewed to its highest peak.

Nose is caramel, bread tanin, sugars, spice, raisin, plum. Taste is brown sugar, nut, wood, spice, lifted by fruit notes, plum but also a touch of apple and pear, slight cola leading to a soft sweet nutty finish. Mouthfeel is good. A delicious brune.

Bottle at Rose Red Cafe, Brugge, 17/10/14. Hazed chestnut brown with a decent off white covering. Nose is caramel, spice, dark malt base, toffee, earthy notes. Taste comprises some bitter roasted notes, spice, toffee, dark fruit rinds, dates, prunes. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, lightly warming alcohol in the close. Solid Belgian strong, good balance, but not quite seeing where the 4+ average score comes from!

Cloudy tea-brown with lots of big flakes of sediment floating around. Half inch of consistent, fine tan head that fades moderate-to-slowly and leaves a film on the surface and substantial attractive ring around the outside. Aroma is white raisin, apple, figs, cherry, bit of grape, light bread and crust. Body is medium-light, on the watery side, very smooth moderate carbonation, fine creamy texture on the palate, no burn. Flavor is bread crust, hint of cinnamon stick and nutmeg, dried cherry, light brown sugar, moderate dates. Just enough heat on the exhale to keep things interesting. Fruitiness is understated in the flavor, in a good way. Hops are minimal (maybe hay or dried grass) and the very little bitterness is infused in the bread-crust flavor. I had pretty high expectations, but they’ve been surpassed. Great beer! Reminds me of Rochefort 8.

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2015 330ml bottle served in a Chimay chalice. A: Pours a very dark amber to brown color forming a big soapy creamy beige head with great retention and some lingering and molasses lacings left in the glass. Quite dirty beer with lots of brown chunks floating around. That?s most probably the dirtiest beer I?ve ever had! S: Very sweet nose. Strong notes of caramel and crystal malts. Sweet brown bread. Very fruity too with strong notes of grapes and raisins. Candi sugar and Belgium bready yeasts. Toffee and caramel. Spicy hints of black pepper and vanilla. T: Complex taste too. Strong notes of dry dark fruits, mainly raisins, dates and plums. Candi sugar, caramel and crystal malts. M: Heavy and creamy body. A bit molasses. Medium to low carbonation. Sweet fruity and bready aftertaste. O: Great drinkability. Sweet beer. Strong Belgian character. [ BA Review @ 1/28/2010 ]
