Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle. Hazy light brown/orange body, medium head. Sweet and delicately fruity (or some kind of perfumey) aroma without the excessive yeast/caramel combo that comes first in many other dark Belgians. I even get some fresh green apple peel. Sweet malty taste with more delicate fruitiness. High carbonation, but somehow the yeastiness is still floral and pleasant. Excellent beer, reminds me of Rochefort 8, only it’s even more smoother. This is an essential classic beer for sure.

Clear ruby copper, cappuccino head. Clean aroma with yellow mature fruits, dessert wine (passito), spices, caramel toffee and butterscotch. Smooth and full taste, which explodes in your mouth. Perfectly balanced.

Dark brown appearance, medium head. Aroma of dried fruits, caramel, roasted barley, coffee and chocolate. Some tannin, low bitterness, rich palate, sweet and balanced. Excellent Bruine style beer.

Bottle from Wine of Galilee in Tallinn. Deep dark brown colour with a hue of chestnut or mahogany. Head is massive initially but drops fast to leave a good layer and some thick lacing. Nose leads to believe that this is going to be quite sweet - it’s got a lot of caramel and toffee, but also a deep woody spiciness (kind of like caraway / cummin seeds and cinnamon), also a red berry tartness. Can’t believe there’s no added sugar here... A bit of an alcoholic note as it’s warmer. Taste is very sweet malts - again, so hard to believe it’s actually sugar-free! - that are somewhat taken over by moderate bitterness and fruity and bread crust sourness, then they mix to create a very nice chocolaty, cinnamony and bready finish with a tingle of warming alcohol. Body medium, carbonation thin but active, palate very soft and creamy, while the finish is somewhat malty dry. A fine, complex beer!

This strong ale showed a dense pour of a cloudy and intense reddish body letting loose tons of very fine bubbles with a vivid and thick hazel head sitting on top of it all. It showed a fair amount of retention and lacing but I would have expected more to be honest. The nose is very nice offering complex notes of floral hops, soapy yeasts, butterscotch, maple syrup and even some grainy malts. Not bad for a brew with no added sugar to develop such a sweet aroma. The taste gives away roasted and sweet malts almost imitating moka. There is a good balance between sweet and bitter that lets you enjoy even the taste. The warmth of the alcohol is perceptible and closely followed by a hoppy finale that wraps it all up in a very distinctive tasting experience adding a appreciable aftertaste. The mouthfeel is dense, oily but also sharp and vapory proving once again the complexity of the product. Overall this is a very well crafted beer that I strongly recommend not only for its quality but also for its complexity that will charm the connoisseur as well as the rookie since its very delicate and accessible.
