Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Classic ’massieve ale’, tasted young but also at 20 years of age - which is possible in this case, since it has been in existence since at least 1984. Deep, cloudy bronze beer under a tight, yellowish white head. Very malty and spicy, deliciously so, with aniseed, coriander and cloves adorning the basic but complex, caramelly and nutty maltiness; very well-balanced with herbal hops and warming, liqueurish alcohol in the finish. I have loved this ale ever since I first encountered it, I guess I’ll have to buy a new bottle for a re-rating; the 20-year old sample at the Kulminator proved that this is a firm and stable beer managing to bridge many years of ageing. Justly a classic, in every sense of the word.

birra bruin, di color ambrato scuro, al naso salgono sentori di prugne. Al palato gran carico di luppolo e caramello con un finale di cioccolato. Birra molto equilibrata tra dolce e amaro che la rende morbida. Spettacolo.

Appearance is mahogany brown, a small fizzy beige head which doesn’t last long. Lumps of sediment come out with the pour. Aroma- caramel, yeast, banana, dried plums, brown sugar, stewed apple, bread, malts, toffee. Taste- lovely. Fluffy mouthfeel, but some carbonation to see things along. Dark fruits dominate- raisin, plum, prune, hint of cherry, banana bread, toffee sweetness, thick and sweet finish. Excellent.

Bottle. Hazy light brown/orange body, medium head. Sweet and delicately fruity (or some kind of perfumey) aroma without the excessive yeast/caramel combo that comes first in many other dark Belgians. I even get some fresh green apple peel. Sweet malty taste with more delicate fruitiness. High carbonation, but somehow the yeastiness is still floral and pleasant. Excellent beer, reminds me of Rochefort 8, only it’s even more smoother. This is an essential classic beer for sure.

Clear ruby copper, cappuccino head. Clean aroma with yellow mature fruits, dessert wine (passito), spices, caramel toffee and butterscotch. Smooth and full taste, which explodes in your mouth. Perfectly balanced.
