Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2014 Dark brown colour, slim creamy head. Nose and taste get a delicate mix of flavours with coffee, spices (pepper, nutmeg, clove), dried and sweet fruits like plums and figs, vanilla, gingerbread, liquorice, red wine and woody smokyness. Very balanced between sour, bitter and spicy with a touch of sweetness rounding it off. Lingering aftertaste. No big alcohol punch despite the 9°. Medium bodied, low-medium carbonation. Soft and dry mouthfeel, even a bit tard. Favourite brown ale out there: complex with big flavours but rounded and a smooth drink.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2014 33cl bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours a wonderful dark brown colour with a moderate beige head. Truly amazing beverage. Rich cakelike taste with prunes, figs and lots of malt tastes dominate. One of the better (if not the best) Belgian brown ale I have tasted. Well worth the hype.

Pours a murky red brown. Delicious aromas of malt and sweetess. Very soft, medium body with little carbo. Tastes of malts, maple syrup, red fruit. Complex, but very well balanced. Suberb beer.

Small bottle. Pours brown, beige head. Nose is toffee/molasses, alcohol, prune. Flavour is same with some leather. I liked this one but it was a little on the sweet caramel side to become a "classic" Belgian for me, sad to see I’m missing out.

Medium chocolate-brown, pretty cloudy, with average-sized beige head. Nice smell of old chocolate and grapes, powerful taste, both roasted and yeasty. Behind that is a sweet, round note.

750 ml bottle. Poured a dark brown color. Aroma is spice, some boozy caramel notes, malts. Flavor is some dark dried fruits, touch of chocolate. Bitter, sweet malts. Alcohol is certainly noticeable. Pretty good on a cold winter night.

@Weilands Market / Columbus Clear dark ruby brown with a long-lasting 1/2" tan head, small swirls of lace. Taste can’t be tied down on the first swallow. This is a brew that grows better as it warms, and as it establishes itself in the palate. Begins with sweet fruit malt, adding dark fruit and earth in the palate, then moving very sm -o -o - o -thly through the palate to a solid, lightly bittered finish. On the first blush, it seems pretty conventional, but with each successive swallow, it becomes more and more absorbing, until it is one of the smoothest Belgian Ales I’ve had. Deceptively effective; glad I have a 4-pack. Highly recommended.

75cl bottle @ home, bb 22/03/2014. Pours brown/ mahogany with a thick lasting brown head. Aroma is sweet, candy sugar-like, dark fruits, bready notes, spices, like clove comes to mind. Flavor then has dark fruits, sweetness, spicyness, malt. Finish is long, sweet and malty, spicy. Warming, but alcohol completely hidden. Full bodied, great balance. This one grows on you. So drinkable, so good!
