Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Bottle @ home. Delayed gusher (my least favorite kind!). The pour’s deep brown with a medium off-white head that slowly settles. The nose is big orange liqueur, chocolate sauce, plenty of fruity esters, spice cabinet, plenty of belgian yeast funkiness. Bruised red fruits. The taste is spiced christmas cake, more orange peel and red berry. Some roasted nut, rich caramel, plenty of chocolate malt. Long, slightly hot finish. The body’s smooth and rich. The ABV’s hidden very well. Overall, a pretty excellent Belgian Strong Ale. Worth checking out.

Bottle erupted. A few other reviews mentioned it happening to them as well so be ready if yours does the same. Light brown with minimal head. Bubbily sweet raisin flavor first swig. Aroma vaguely like that of red wine. Malty and roasted nuts, though both are subtle. Same can be said about the red wine character. Extremely subtle beer, what’s all the fuss about? I let it warm a bit and the flavor opens up some more. Finish longer and more enjoyable still not a very tasty one for me. Not bad in any regard, though hugely overrated.

From elcervecero. In Teku glass. Watching Sons of Anarchy 1x10. Although the aroma could improve, the taste is pretty delicious. Alcohol completly hidden. Had some sediments that didnt affect its taste

Bottle L151107341 bff 29/05/2017. Extreme gusher. Red-brown color with direct vanishing extreme foam mass. Aroma of sweet malt, soy sauce and sugar candy. Taste is less sweet as the aroma suggests. Caramel, dark fruit and a little wine-like.

0.33 l bottle from belgiuminabox, bottled in March 2015. Clear, deep red with a huge, creamy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish, fruity-malty aroma of raisins, plum puree, dark cherries, caramel and port. Sweet, fruity-malty taste of raisins, prunes, candied cherries, caramel and port, followed by a yeasty, slightly bitter and warming finish with notes of dark chocolate. Medium to full body, creamy and smooth mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very tasty and complex, superbly balanced and moreish. Great!

Bottle exploded when opened. Aroma is close to the one of the La Montagnarde from the same brewery. Alcohol is still present, but maybe in a softly way. Not my type (I probably said that to all the beers of the same genre), but this could be a nice beer for people enjoy this kind.

Light coffe colour. Medium roasting. Light licorice taste. Feels a bit dusty in the mouth.
