COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

750ml bottle. Fizzes like crazy as you take the cap off (no cork), but thankfully it’s not a gusher, just in a hurry to get in the duvel tulip. Pours chocolate brown with a ton of coarse ground pepper sized floaties and a two fingered oatmeal colored head that dies away slowly. The aroma is dark, ripe fruits, raisins, prunes, plums and some spicy, yeasty aromas. Maybe some Burgandy. The mouthfeel is large. The taste is sweet at first with dark, ripe fruits followed by some light alcohol notes, some light bitternes, and an almost creamy mouthfeel that finishes with a lot of taste and a nice, mild alcohol burn. Pretty tasty.

Thanks to tderoeck for the bottle! Pours with a big thick head. Lovey brown/caramel color - semi-translucent but basically opaque. A lot of sweet malts, caramel, and sweetness on the nose. The palate is very light bodied with a soft sweetness. Finish is long and sweet. I would recommend water biscuits in between if you’d like to keep your palate fresh for this one. I recommend drinking it at the temperature on the bottle (12-14 C). I kept it in the fridge overnight and was greeted with a much more alcoholic profile showcasing its 9% ABV.

October 20, 2014. Bottle at home, best before february 2016. Pours dark brown with a dense quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is sweet prunes, raisins, caramel, light spices. Taste is medium sweet with dried fruits, brown sugar, dark fruits, very light bitterness. Finish is light roasted bitterness and medium sweet toffee and plum. Medium bodied, quite fizzy carbonation.

21/11/2014 @home, 33 cl bottle from de Hopduvel. Nice dark brown colour with light beige head. Aroma reminds me of forrest, fruits, nuts, malts, caramel. Taste is some sweetness, light bitternes, dark fruits, nuts, light mocha and bitterness at the end. All verry subtle and that’s what makes this beer so strong, it’s subtility and balance. This is one of the only beers that has never dissapointed me. If I ever can have one with a long lasting head, it gets 5.

RateBeer Top 50 Belgium challenge. Nice dark brown with medium tan head. A bit of dark sediment in the last few drops. Rich, hot, dark fruit at the end. Overall very nice but this leans towards too hot/viscous for me.

Deep brown, small tan head. Aromas of yeast, red fruit, and considerable malt. Flavor is quite malt forward, very smooth, low carbonation almost like a nitro beer. Plenty of fruity esters. A bit overly sweet for me.

Mahogany brown colour with delicate head on top. Aroma has red berries, syrup and yeast. Taste starts with berries, tannin, slight syrup. Then there comes vanilla and cream. Pretty soft flavours. Medium body with medium carbonation.
