COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

A deep red beer with a fantastic head. The aroma is sweet and fruity - a very complex aroma. The flavor is very fruity and very complex with a good sweetness and plum-notes. Only slightly bitter. A really good tasting beer. The beer also helps a great sauce.

(Bottle 33 cl) In this original version simply called "Abbaye des Rocs" - all other versions are newer inventions. Very dark brown with a frothy and very lively beige head. Flavourwise we’re talking Trappist-territory here. Fantastic complex malty notes full of dried fruits, caramel, chocolate, used diapers, candi sugar - well, you name it. This beer has got pretty much everything, and by each sip you discover a new senasation. Extremely complex with a nice, warming alcohol. A classic indeed. 301297

RB rating 400. 33 cL bottle. Pours orange brown with a good off-white head. Aroma of malts, yeast, slight citric and fruity. Flavour is sweet and spicy. Soft malt flavour mixes with the alcohol giving a strong and fullbodied flavour and finish.

Bottled. Dark amber colour, huge foamy head. Aroma is complex, plum, alcohol and lots more. The flavour was not too good compared with aroma, very sweet and smoked hay. The flavour didn’t impress me, though it got a quite good rating it’s mainly because the aroma was lovely!

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2007 Bottle. Weak malty aroma. Brown colour, small head. Flavour is malty and slightly peppery. Pointy aniseed aftertaste. Good body, slightly swelling mouthfeel. Hint of liquorice aftertaste. Not as peppery (or as good) as I expected. 6 3 8 3 18

Overly carbonated, slow gusher; it pours with a lot of foam. The aroma betrays some sourness, together with the Belgian character. Good body strength; it has caramel flavor, with moderate sweetness and a nutty edge; no sourness, just a shade of vegetables. The bitterness is medium-low, with some alcoholic component in the end; the final is also very nutty. Good but strange.

Cloudy red-amber color, with floating particles, with a rather fizzy head, reducing quickly to a creamy thin layer. Strong malt aroma, mature. It has a good malt and caramel aroma, some sweetness, but possibly some overfermentation ate out some of the body. Not much bitter; the alcohol warms the mouth at the end. Good for lovers of the style, but not complex enough as it is today; gimme more body and more hops.

Hazy red-amber colour, persistent collar of creamy foam. Malt aroma, candi sugar, caramel. Rather dry malt taste, hides very well the alcohol content, well balanced by a strong bitterness of hop and burnt sugar. Light liquorice when warmer.
