COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Not quite as good as the gran cru, but the flavors keep coming as the beer nears room tempurature. I LOVE the belgians. Re-rate. Ruby brown color. Gurgling foamy head. Strong aroma of tangerines and tart green apples sifting through the olfactory senses. Smell of orange blossums pouring out of the glass like a mad scientist’s concoction. Delicate sweet malt and wild flower honey conjoined with citric hop flavors embrace the tongue. Lace slowly drools down the side of the glass rejoining the compact screen of bubbles floating on top of this malt elixer. Smell of Bayer’s children’s aspirin peering in. Wafts of raisins, plumbs, dates, and kiwi complement a subtle peppery mango flavor. Candy sweet taste left on the lips. Banana and nectarines in the nose and on the tongue as this nears room temp. Buttery walnut finish casually evolves into a citric sensation devoid of bitterness, leaving a soft warming alcohol sensation. WAY under-rated.

Pours ruby red with medium head disappearing fast. Aroma: plums, raisins, wood, dried dark fruit and caramel. Taste: rich taste of dark dried fruit such as plums and raisins is followed by some heavy malt and woody taste, finishing with a warming palate. Nice one.

AROMA : caramel, bread, cereal, toast, roasty, plum, raisin (grilled, then in the aftertaste fresh), cooked apples, bubblegum, banana, butterscotch, woody, spicy, complex. APPEARANCE red, brown body, bit hazy, frothy, white foam with outstanding tenue. TASTE : heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter, bit salty. PALATE :full body, creamy, average carbonation, long sweet finish with fuzziness. OVERALL a great strong ale like no others, leaves nice long aftertaste no so overwhelming as the taste/aroma itself. Bottle from fridge, champaign glass.

Bottle at home in London - sourced in a trade. Pours clear chestnut brown with a lot of sediment with a creamy beige head that calms down faster than I expected it would. Great aroma, lots of semi-dark fruits, raisins, caramel, rich bread, some Belgian yeast, candi sugar. Big sweet flavor with scoops of caramel and toffee, lots of ripe fruits, berries, some toasted grains and bread, very mild earthy bitterness. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Only mild warmth in the finish, some further toffee character, dark bready malts, some esters, fruitcake, bread, toasted sugar, caramel. Delicious stuff. Quintessential.

My sample had many yeast floaties. Not sure this is typical. Colour is dark amber. Average head. Aroma are all about dry fruits. Sweet but sufficiently dry. Very well balanced. Reminds me of st bernardus abt.

Sehr gutes Bier!

Bottle from Dranken Verheyen in Poppel. The beer is dark ruby red colored and pours a large cream colored head, with average carbonation. The aroma is rich palate of sweet and bitter tones, like raisins, caramel and dark fruits but also hops and spices. The taste is smooth and full and is medium sweet and fruity, which ends in a well balanced bitterness with some spices and the 3 hops are just a little noticable. The finish is long, complex and is pleasantly bitter.

Bottle 0.75L. Hazy dark copper body with large, frothy, tan head, mostly lasting with some nice lacing. Moderate-to-heavy malty (caramel) and light hoppy (citrus, flowers) aroma with notes of red fruits, spices, alcohol; very light feeling of medicine. Moderate sweet flavour with light acidic note. Medium body with watery-to-oily texture; soft carbonation; light alcoholic warming in the finish.
