Bottle, pours dark brown with hints of red. A 2 finger light tan head. Aroma is fruity with some plum and dark candy sugar, mixed with light alcohol. Starts failry sweet with notes of honey, light bitterness and an alcohol burn in the finish. The mouth is light and has a crisp feel from the medium to heavy carbonation. Good beer.

Colore bruno, schiuma molto persistente ma non troppo cremosa. Stupisce anche dall’odore con note pronunciate di malto e leggere di frutti di bosco. E’ una birra piacevole nonostante i 9° e in bocca ha sempre qualcosa in più di una belgian strong ale. Corpo vivo, marcato e molto ben bilanciato con il fruttato. Addirittura qualche nota di affumicato. Il retrogusto amaro completa una birra davvero ben riuscita. Da provare

Ok, two things 1) People! learn how to pour a beer! Mine is quite clear and sparkling. 2) There’s no "Abbaye" on my bottles - they’re labled "Brasserie des Rocs." Brilliant reddish copper colored with a self-regenerating creamy head. Aromas are rich and enticing - spicy-sweet with some fruit, apples and pear. Smooth, rich and strong fruity flavors. A little flinty bitterness. Sweet/tart finish. Subtle alcohol. These brewers really know how to construct a beer.

pours dark murky brown, floaters with a very nice dark beige head, excllent retention and lacing. dried dark fruits, spices, pepper, roasted malts, aged malts, leather, hint of acidity, some sweetness but good supporting hops - earthy, somewhat citrusy. soft and lively carbonation, medium long grassy finish. awesome!

You really know what your getting with these big belgian strongs. Youre gonna get a nutty rich dark fruit filled sweet beer with a dry finish. Chunks of yeast were unappetizing but still a tasty brew,

Typical belgian dark ale, on the nutty side. Tons of yeast floating around.

Above average, murky brown in color. Taste was fairly simplex, with definite grape. Decent carbonation in the mouthfeel.. not bad overall.

Sampled at Larsniclas testing. Pours amber with a big light brown head. Smells chocolate and caramel malty. Tastes strawbarry, caramel malty and with a bitter muddy finish.

Bottle. Bit of a gusher this one. Lost half the bottle unfortunately. Pour is a deep dark brown with a huge dark brown head. Feel away super fast becoming non existent almost immediately. Aromas are very sweet showing dark sugars and treacle. A little light stone fruit sourness in the back ground. Some alcohol present as well. Flavours are also quite sweet. Some alcohol burn on the finish. Slightly thinner mouthfeel than expected.

I wanted (yet) another St Bernadus Christmas on tap, but the strength was just too high so I settled for a bottle of this on that fateful afternoon I first visited The Red Rose in Brugge (Dec 2011).
The 9% ABV being a whole 1% less than the St Bernadus I felt very righteous and the wife didn’t notice the alcohol content (double bonus).
Nine tenths of the beer was poured for me into the glass, the remaining sediment infested tenth I swallowed at the end. The beer was a deep, deep brown, red, purple colour, mostly red I suppose: on top an off-white head that fades fair too swiftly.
The smells are mostly sweet: molasses and sugar on toast, there is also a yeasty, dirty aroma hidden away that comes out when the beer begins to warm in the glass.
This isn’t a gulper; you’ve got to sip it: the flavours are complex and confusing. Sweet up front with a malt flavour, leaning towards burnt candy floss and treacle tarts as you get into it.
Rich, but not as thick as you might imagine, certainly different to what I expected.
Strange brew, would have preferred another St Bernadus to be honest!

750mL bottle, pours an opaque dark red with a small beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, syrup, caramel malts and yeast. Flavour of maple syrup, caramel, dark fruits (especially berries, prunes and dates), and yeast. Quite complex and full-bodied, with medium-high carbonation. Delicious.
